Georgetown University is a private research university in Washington, D.C. Established in 1789 by Bishop John Carroll as Georgetown College, it has grown to eleven undergraduate and graduate schools over the decades. With over 48 different disciplines and applicants from more than 135 countries, admission to Georgetown is considered highly selective. This university has several notable alumni including 28 Rhodes Scholars, 33 Truman Scholars, 32 Marshall Scholars, 2 US presidents and 2 US Supreme Court Justices amongst several others.

If you wish to go to Georgetown University, then your competition is certainly high. It is best to apply as soon as possible and finish the process. Below you will find everything that you need to know before beginning the Georgetown University admission process.

What Is The Most Recent Class Profile Of Georgetown University?

Georgetown University is known for its highly selective admission process. The class profile acquired for the class of 2024 showed that the recent acceptance rate was as low as 15.5 per cent. Out of the total 21,318 applications received for this academic year, only 3,309 were accepted. 10 per cent of these are international students representing over 138 different countries. These statistics are enough to show that the Georgetown University admission process is brutal and students need to be on their top form to ensure a seat.

What Are The Requirements For Georgetown University Admission?

There are three major requirements that students should focus on before beginning the Georgetown University admission process, that  is, GPA, test scores and application requirements. Although the official GPA requirements haven’t been specified by the university, an analysis of data acquired over the years specifies that students need a GPA of at least 4.01 to be safe. The university wants all its students to be at the top of their class. Along with these, they also consider the difficulty level of classes undertaken at high school level, like that of AP or IB courses. In case your average GPA falls below 4.01, higher SAT or ACT scores will be required to compensate for it.

Next, all applicants are required to write either the SAT or ACT in order to submit an application. The average SAT score at Georgetown is 1450 on a scale of 1600, whereas the average ACT score is 33. The writing section of these aforementioned exams is considered optional and may not be considered during the admission review process. The SAT subject tests are also not mandatory but highly recommended. This means that while the subject tests aren’t a necessity to apply, submitting them can demonstrate certain strengths and put you further ahead in the competition.

Lastly, an overview of the application requirements is given below –

  • Electronic application is accepted.
  • Essay or personal statement is required for all freshmen.
  • Submission of 2 letters of recommendation is mandatory.
  • GMAT/GRE scores (verbal: 160; quant: 158; AWA: 4.5).
  • A personal interview is conducted for all.
  • An application fee of $75 is to be paid. However, a fee waiver option is available.

For international students, scores of English proficiency tests are mandatory to be submitted. In order to be eligible for admission, the following scores are required –

English TestMinimum required score
TOEFL (iBT)100
TOEFL (PBT)600
TOEFL (CBT)250
IELTS Academic7.0

Other than these, international applicants are also required to apply for an F1 or J1 student visa and require I-20 forms and DS-2019 forms from the university in order to be eligible for application of student visas. For these, the following documents are required –

  • Copy of your passport
  • Admission letter
  • Official academic records
  • Bank statement of applicant or sponsor
  • Affidavit of support
  • I-20/DS-2019 form
  • Original bank statement
  • Certificate of finance stating availability of funds for one year’s expenditure

How To Apply And Begin The Georgetown University Admission Process?

The most important part of the Georgetown University admission procedure is to complete your application as soon as possible within the deadlines. There are a few steps to finish your application smoothly and successfully.

  • The applicants are required to fill in basic demographic information such as address and contact information in the Georgetown application. Once you submit this, you are liable to create an applicant file. Also, as aforementioned, an application fee of $75 is to be paid at the end of this form. Students undergoing financial hardships can request a fee waiver.

  • On completing the application profile, an email containing the instructions to create an application account is sent to the student. By means of this account, you can track the process of your application and even save progress.

  • Next, the applicant is required to submit the details such as the name and email of their high school and the teacher writing your recommendation. This is to notify the respective authorities to send forth your official transcripts and letters of recommendation directly.

  • An application supplement containing your information about extracurriculars, choice of majors, and personal essay is to be submitted next.

  • The applicants must submit their test scores next. The university requires students to submit their standardised test scores from each test sitting. SAT subject test scores and AP or IB scores aren’t mandatory but highly recommended as a way to enhance your application.
Georgetown SAT code is 5244, whereas the ACT code is 0668.

  • The university expects the applicants to go through an alumni interview, that is, if one lives in the same region as mentioned in the application form. Since no on-campus interviews are conducted, this requirement may be waived if no alumni reside near you.

  • Lastly, students are open to submitting any supplemental materials if they’re interested in an art, dance, music or theatre programme at the university. However, it is to be noted that this is optional and not a requirement.
