About
A private Ivy League research university, Yale University is based in New Haven in the state of Connecticut in the United States of America. Regarded as among the most prestigious higher education institutions in the world, it is also the third-oldest institute of higher education in the country. Founded in 1701, the university was formally known as the Collegiate School from 1701 to 1718 and then Yale College from 1718 to 1887. The university is also renowned for its contributions to research in a wide variety of areas, especially scientific research. Yale is the first university in the United States to award a PhD in 1861. The university saw a vast increase in student and faculty numbers post 1890 owing to a rapid campus expansion and scientific research.
The university is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) and it is academically affiliated with the Association of American Universities (AAU), the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU), the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU), and Space-grant colleges. The university’s sporting affiliations include NCAA Division - I, the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), the Ivy League, ECAC Hockey, and the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA).
The university is divided into fourteen schools comprising the original undergraduate college, the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and twelve professional schools. The Yale Corporation governs the university as a whole but the curriculum and degree programmes are overlooked by the faculty of each separate school.

Yale’s campus is spread out over varied parts of the city of New Haven. The university’s central campus covers over 260 acres in downtown New Haven, 500 acres in western New Haven comprising its sporting facilities, and a 136-acre Bayer HealthCare Complex in West Haven.
