Overview

About

Trent University (TU) is a public liberal arts university located in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada with a satellite campus in Oshawa that serves the Durham Regional Municipality. TU is well-known for its Oxbridge-style college system and small class sizes. Trent University was established in 1964 as a result of the efforts of a citizens' committee interested in establishing a university to serve the City of Peterborough and the surrounding counties. The committee appointed University of Toronto Dean Thomas H. B. Symons as chair of the academic planning committee, and Symons became the university's first president. TU's Symons campus, named after the founding president Thomas Symons, is situated on the banks of the Otonabee River in the northeast part of Peterborough. Ron Thom, a Canadian architect, built the university’s campus plan and its original college structures, including Champlain College, Lady Eaton College, Bata Library, Chemistry Building, and the Faryon bridge that spans the Otonabee.

Trent University’s acceptance rate stands at 33% and serves about 9,400+ undergraduate students and 740+ graduate students out of which 1,320+ are international students. Trent has included ancient beliefs and perspectives in its programing for over 50 years. It was the first institution in Canada, and only the second in North America, to create a department devoted to the study of Indigenous peoples and Indigenous knowledge. The Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies at TU offers undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs in Indigenous Studies. Trent University offers an Indigenous Environmental Studies degree as well as a specialized Diploma in Foundations of Indigenous Learning for people of Indigenous heritage.

Trent Excalibur represents the institution in Canadian Interuniversity Sport. It is primarily represented by its colleges, which include Champlain, Lady Eaton, Catharine Parr Traill, Otonabee, and Peter Gzowski. Each institution has its own dorms, dining hall, and student government. The student government (Cabinet) and its committees work with the College Office and dons to plan and deliver a variety of events for both non-resident and resident members, including visiting scholars, artists, musicians, and scientists; College dinners and dances; Fall and Winter College Weekend; and intramural co-educational competitions in a variety of sports. Although TU is primarily an undergraduate institution, master's and doctoral degrees are available.

Trent University Placements

Students in the School of Business have the opportunity to truly launch their careers even before graduation. In the fourth year, students can select between a placement or internship practical learning opportunity or apply for direct entry (out of high school) Business co-ops or Business Accounting co-ops.

Trent University Placements are typically for fourth-year students and are unpaid, part-time jobs that last approximately one day per week for the term (minimum of 100 hours), with students receiving a half credit. In addition to some academic work, placement hours are required. Because the placement course is usually one of five in the term, students must plan their courses around the placement opportunity. Local placements are available in Peterborough, Durham, and the surrounding areas.

Internships are for fourth-year students and a student's time away from school (a break in studies) where students work full-time for 6, 8, or 12 months and obtain full academic credit.

Co-op provides students with the opportunity to receive work-integrated experience learning that will help them get a head start on a career. The Business and Accounting Co-ops program supports graduate students in gaining a competitive advantage while gaining experience in a variety of industries. Co-op allows students to gain on-the-job experience, build or improve technical abilities, explore career alternatives, network with a wide range of individuals and organizations, learn from mentors and tutors, improve communication and presentation skills, and develop technical writing skills.
