university of tennessee admission

Established in 1794 as Blount College, the University of Tennessee has evolved over the decades into an institution of premier public research and Tennessee’s flagship university. With more than 900 programs across 11 colleges, it has been consistently classified for producing high research activity by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Today, the University has over $1 billion invested in various projects that are under design and construction at their research centres. Their interdisciplinary approach to education and research, and ample learning opportunities enable students to choose the path that would allow them to access the best academic, personal, and career goals.

After choosing a college or university for your degree, it is crucial to go through the process of application and admission in excruciating detail to ensure that no important points are missed. Students must review aspects like the prerequisites and financial aid while applying to any college. Our guide below compiles everything you need to know about the University of Tennessee admission process.

What Are The Courses Offered?

The University of Tennessee offers over 350 undergraduate, 540 postgraduate, and 300 study abroad courses to students. Along with these, several online, scholar, and honours programs are also conducted. The major fields of study at this university include Sciences, Arts, Agriculture, Architecture, Design, Business, Health, Law, Engineering, Communication, Nursing, and Social Work amongst many others.

University Of Tennessee Admission – Eligibility & Documents

For applying to undergraduate courses, candidates must submit their ACT or SAT scores along with the official transcripts acquired after the completion of a high school diploma. The admissions committee also considers the candidate’s involvement in extracurricular activities, leadership roles and community services. They also require the students to submit an essay and personal statement. Letters of recommendation are also highly encouraged.

For applying to postgraduate courses, students must have a 4-year bachelor’s degree or equivalent strictly from an accredited college or university only, along with the official transcripts acquired. Standardised test scores like GRE, GMAT, and LSAT are also considered. For these courses too, letters of recommendation and extracurricular activities are evaluated.

International students are required to take English proficiency tests like TOEFL or IELTS to be eligible for application. In fact, postgraduate applicants must also undergo a course-by-course evaluation for their applications to be considered. Although, it is to be noted that the documents required may differ according to different programs. To ensure the exact list of required documents, students must select their respective programs and refer to the prerequisites accordingly.

How to Begin The University Of Tennessee Admission Process?

UT has three types of semesters for students to apply for – spring intake, fall intake, and summer intake. Every year, the university releases two deadlines for the admission process. One is for students to submit their applications, and the second is the confirmation deadline, before which the university makes a decision and confirms the candidate’s enrollment. However, these dates vary widely for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses each year. In order to begin the admission process, students must apply on their website first.

The first step of the application process is to become a Vol-In-Progress or a VIP by filling in the Go Vols application form or the common application. Students can do so by visiting the official website and registering their credentials there. On verifying your account, and setting a new password, you become a VIP.

The second step is to apply and send forward your application details. Students will have to select their application type, that is, whether they are freshmen, transfer, graduate, or international students.

The third step is to fill in your details. At each step, students are required to fill in their particulars and information regarding their immigration, contact, family, and residency. After which, their academic history and test scores will be required to be filled in. As you progress further in your application, you will be required to add recommendations, distinctive activities, employment details, and writing personal statements. Next, candidates must select their preferable course, and lastly, an application fee of $50 for undergraduate courses, and $60 for postgraduate courses, must be paid along with a signature to review and verify your application.

The university usually informs the students about their enrollment confirmation within an already stipulated time period from the submission of the application. All decisions are conveyed online, mostly via email.

Which Tuition Fees Should Be Considered During The University Of Tennessee Admission Process?

Before applying to any university or college, it is extremely crucial for students to go through the tuition fees and consider the different ways they could pay them. Fees vary according to the course and program selected by the students. For instance, the average annual fee for undergraduate and graduate courses was reported to be around $31,000 each, whereas for veterinary courses it was around $57,100. If you are interested in law courses, UT charges an annual fee of approximately $35,000 – $40,000. However, for law flexible courses it is much less, around $27,600.

It is important to note that the tuition fees vary from course-to-course, and are liable to change before each academic session according to the decisions of the university. Students are advised to check the official website before applying for accurate and precise data.

The University of Tennessee has many options for students to help them afford tuition fees. It is essential to check which of these you’re eligible for and apply accordingly. Some of the scholarships offered by the university, specifically for international students are International Undergraduate Merit Scholarship, International Volunteer Scholarship, International Tennessee Explore Scholarship, International Beacon Scholarship, and Global Ambassador Scholarship. All of these require a specific GPA which may vary every year, and other minor eligibility criteria.

Students can also avail of work-study funds to cover the cost of living by working part-time. On average, students earn about $3,000 per year but it also depends vastly on the number of hours and award amount. Other than these, student loans are also available which usually have low-interest rates and tax-deductible interest payments.

What Is The Acceptance Rate At UT?

Although having the required minimum GPA and passing all the proficiency tests does not ensure your enrollment, your chances of getting into the university are still quite high.
