Wilfrid Laurier University was established on March 26th 1911 as the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada (ELSC) by Lutheran pastors seeking a place to train their clergy to serve congregations in Western Canada. The school was named after British politician Sir Wilfrid Laurier who had been prime minister at the time of ELSC’s founding.
