Wilfrid Laurier University

Wilfrid Laurier University is one of the public universities in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. It is one of the largest universities in Canada by enrolment with 41,600 full-time and part-time undergraduates. Laurier has an enrolment of about 17,000 full-time and part-time undergraduate students and over 1,400 graduate students. 

Wilfrid Laurier University was established on March 26th 1911 as the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada (ELSC) by Lutheran pastors seeking a place to train their clergy to serve congregations in Western Canada. The school was named after British politician Sir Wilfrid Laurier who had been prime minister at the time of ELSC’s founding. It started teaching classes in 1912; it later opened its first college for women in 1914 which was called Victoria College then became known as Woodstock College when an extension campus was formed there later on during WWI when male students were sent overseas to fight against Germany.

St. Jerome’s University

St. Jerome’s University is a federated school of the University of Waterloo. It is one of the many public Catholic universities in Waterloo. Famously named after Conrad Grebel, one of the leaders of the Swiss Brethren and founder of the Swiss Anabaptist movement.

Grebel also oversees the University of Waterloo’s Graduate Theological Studies department. The Toronto School of Theology is associated with Conrad Grebel University College.
