CAT Vs GMAT – Making The Right Choice

CAS Letter

Are you a university student prepping for the CAT with your peers? Or are you a working professional who wants to pursue an MBA but is unsure which of the two most essential business school entrance examinations to take – the CAT vs GMAT?

If you’re attempting to figure out what the two examinations are and whether you should take GMAT or CAT, we guarantee you will be able to make an informed decision by the end of this article. The distinctions between the GMAT and the CAT are listed in the chart below. This should make it simple for you to begin your investigation.

But first, what do you believe is the most significant distinction when we say CAT vs GMAT?

The GMAT is a global entrance exam authorised by roughly 2300 business schools and over 7000 management programmes. It is extremely essential but straightforward when you see the syllabus of the GMAT. The CAT, on the other hand, is a national exam in India that is mostly approved by B-schools.

In India, just a few business schools recognise GMAT results. CAT scores are also accepted by a few foreign MBA schools.

When understanding the GMAT and CAT difference, it’s important to remember that the GMAT is administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). They are the GMAT’s owner and administrator. The CAT, on the other hand, was created by the Indian Institutes of Management and is administered by them (IIMs).

Difference Between CAT And GMAT – A Detailed Overview

  • CAT & GMAT Score Validity & Frequency

Assume you’ve completed the GMAT and are now ready to apply to business schools. Is your GMAT score legitimate?

Your GMAT score is good for five years after you take the exam!

However, if you take the CAT exam, keep in mind that your score is only good for a year. If you don’t apply to MBA schools with your CAT score this year, you’ll have to repeat the exam the following year.

It’s also crucial to understand how frequently these two tests are performed.

While the GMAT is available all year, the CAT exam is only offered once a year on a date set by the IIMs. So, if you don’t do well on the CAT this year, you’ll have to wait until next year to retake the exam.

And the IIM that will be holding the admission exam will usually release the date for the CAT exam in July or August each year.

  • Eligibility Requirements

If you are 18 years old, you can take the GMAT. You can also take the exam with parental authorization if you are between the ages of 13 and 18. All you have to do is make an account on mba.com and register for the GMAT.

To take the CAT, you must have a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a recognised university. You can still take the CAT if you are in your final year of college.

The GMAT is a superior option to the CAT in terms of eligibility and score validity. What do you think of this? Let us know in the comments below!

  • How Many Times Can You Attempt

You have a total of eight chances to take the GMAT in your lifetime. The GMAC has designated this as the upper limit.

While you can take the exam up to eight times, you can only take the GMAT five times per year with a minimum of 16 days between exams.

If you’re taking the CAT, you’ll only be able to take it once a year. The date will be announced by the IIM that is hosting the exam that year.

  • How Many Colleges Accept GMAT & CAT?

The GMAT is required for admission to the world’s top business schools. More than 2,300 B-Schools accept GMAT exam scores for almost 7,000 programmes, according to the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), which administers the GMAT.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), which administer the test, are the only institutions that recognise CAT scores. Apart from the IIMs, roughly 30 other institutes accept CAT scores. S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR) in Mumbai and Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA) in Chennai are two such institutions.

The essential lesson is that the GMAT is a more practical and globally acknowledged exam, whereas the CAT is primarily a theoretical exam that is exclusively accepted by Indian B-Schools like the IIMs.
