ToggleIf you are a university student in a foreign country, it might be difficult to keep up with the new environment, people and you might often wonder if you’ve still got it in you. This is a common experience among all international students and history is evidence that there’s nothing to worry about. Studying abroad is a once in lifetime’s opportunity. You don’t just have to find out ways to survive in university but have to really live the experience to make the most of it.
Ways To Survive In University In Your First Year
They say the first day of every training is always the toughest. The first year of university is also quite the same. Here are some things you can do to make the most of the student experience.
Focus On Getting Work Experience
One thing that most freshers skip thinking about in their first year of university study is that more than university education it is the work experience that will get you your dream job. Quantity and quality of work experience you gain as a student says a lot about your personal attribute, how you utilize your time and how resourceful you can be. If you have just begun your course at a university overseas, holidays and semester breaks are the perfect time for you to start gathering work experience. Just like the credit score in your academic transcripts are important in calculating your GPA, the number of places/hours you work as a student counts in calculating your creditworthiness as a full-time employee.
Build A Strong Network For A Strong Net Worth
As a student, you are allowed to make mistakes. That’s one thing that differentiates you from a working professional. When you are a student, you do not realise the importance of building a strong network and usually find comfort in the university dorm room. However, talking to people often leads to broadening one’s perspective in life and hearing about interesting stories that you could have never imagined of and forming connections with the right people. Building a strong network is often one of the ways you survive in university even if you do not quite enjoy the course you have chosen. Sometimes, knowing the right people means getting help from the right place. One of the most common ways of networking is by joining a society.
This brings me to my next point,
Join A Club Or A Society
Every college and university has student clubs and societies that are created for the exchange of interest, culture and for organising events. More often than not events are organised by the Student Union of the university. Unless you are an event management student with a scholarship and the planning and organising of university events is your leadership. You must find out about the communities, clubs and societies in your college and join them. This will also help you to improve points for your CV in case you have represented any community or have played a pivotal role in the society you’re a part of.
Save Money On Meals
The Good To Go app helps you find unsold food around your nearest restaurants where you can buy the food for a cheaper price. The Too Good to Go App has helped several students find free or cheap meals that are fresh. The UK did a splendid job in re-distributing approximately 3000 dishes among people who could access the cheapest deals through the online app. Initially, the extra food the shop could not sell on a particular day used to end up in the garbage box, however, this is a great way to not only save food but also save money on food as a student. This especially is a helpful deal when you are trying to save money for big-ticket purchases.
How to Survive In University When You Feel Homesick
Feeling homesick is a normal thing but let’s not forget that if you want to check whether you are homesick or not, you should first know its symptoms.
What Are The Symptoms of Homesickness?
- You feel lonely inside your accommodation and reminisce on the time you spent at your favourite spot, back home.
- The feeling of detachment from the present environment is very strong.
- You prefer living in isolation without talking much. This may be temporary till you find your confidence again and adjust to the new place and people.
- You have caught yourself staring at pictures of your home, neighbourhood and friends on your phone.
- The feeling of nostalgia is frequent and gets stronger each time you think about your home.
Explore New Places, Discover New Surroundings
One of the most recommended ways to survive in university whenever you feel homesick is getting out of the room that you’ve isolated yourself in, put out the trash that’s piled up for 2 weeks, wear your trainers and step out of your house!
Strolling around the new neighbourhood, finding out new shops and restaurants will help you feel a lot better about yourself and your situation. There’s a different feeling associated with discovering new places, it makes you feel hopeful about the future. I like to believe that the surprise of discovering a new place is almost like finding out an opportunity you didn’t know existed.
Join A Sport Club On Campus
Working your mind is not enough to sustain your grades and survive in the university. There are many benefits of engaging in athletics and sports which count in getting yourself an all-rounded student experience. If you find yourself regularly feeling homesick, it may be time to engage in a body sport. The beauty of a physical sport is that it helps you improve focus as well as performance. While sports were intrinsically made for enjoyment, they are a sign of a healthy lifestyle.
In addition to keeping your body healthy, sports are also a great way to meet new people and become a part of the larger groups. One of the most special ways to survive in university is by making new friends and long-lasting bonds and engaging in competitive sports is a great way to do that. It can be difficult to make friends in a place and in a new environment but if you take part in team sports, your chances of making friends will be higher. As opposed to solo sports such as running or cycling, team sports encourages a spirit of teamwork and healthy competition. However, while team sports are a good way to socialise as well as work out, solo sports are suited for students who enjoy their own company.
