Visa For Post-Study Work In Australia: Eligibility & Duration

Post-Study Work In Australia

Unlike in several other English-speaking countries, your student visa does not automatically grant you the right to stay and work once you finish your degree. When you have your student visa, the government permits you on a temporary basis for study with the understanding that you will leave after your course is over and before your visa expires. Although, Australia continues to have a high need for international employees of students who have received a degree in Australia. Hence, students who complete their graduation are eligible for special post-study work in Australia.

There are various visa categories available to international students and Australia offers a fairly simple points-based system for obtaining permanent residency. Students can work after earning their Master’s, Bachelor’s or PhD degrees through post-study work in Australia. Learn how to qualify for this visa after completing your studies in Australia by reading this essay.

Post-Study Work In Australia

What Qualifications Must One Meet To Obtain A Post-Study Visa In Australia?

It’s fairly easy. For international students to be qualified for a post-study work visa in Australia, they must have qualifications in:

  • A Bachelor or Bachelor (honours) or
  • A Master’s, Master’s (extended) or Master’s in research or
  • A Doctoral (PhD)

Note The Eligible Qualifications Necessary

Regarding the type of degree necessary for post-study work in Australia, there are two crucial points to be aware of. The post-study work visa is not available to students who have finished academic programmes that solely grant diploma qualifications. You might, however, be qualified for a visa under “Graduate Work” with only a diploma. One of the two streams of the Temporary Graduate visa is the post-study work visa (or subclass 485). The Graduate Work stream is the other one.

Second, the student’s eligibility for post-study work in Australia is not impacted by their field of study or subject area. It doesn’t matter if you have a recognised Master’s, Bachelor’s, PhD or MBA; you can complete a degree in computer science, mechanical engineering, professional accounting or any other discipline. If your course satisfies all the other requirements, you will still be qualified for the post-study work visa.

Australia Post-Study Work Visa Duration In Detail

The second factor considers how long the course will last. For students to qualify for post-study work in Australia, they must have completed at least two years of academic study in Australia. The overall length of your studies must be at least two academic years, whether you get one degree or several. For instance, you can fulfil these criteria by earning a Master’s degree that takes two years to complete, or you can meet it by earning a Master’s degree in one year, followed by another Master’s degree that takes one year and you will still be qualified for a post-study visa.

Furthermore, the course(s) must be finished in no less than 16 months. The Australian study requirement under the post-study work stream will only be taken into account for studies completed at the Bachelor’s level and above.

In terms of post-study work in Australia after a Master’s, you might apply the length of study for both the Graduate Diploma and the Master’s degree toward fulfilling the Australian study requirement, for instance, if you completed a Graduate Diploma in Engineering that led to a Master’s in Engineering. The time spent in the Graduate Diploma, which did not result in an acceptable qualification, will not be taken into account for the study requirement if you obtained an Engineering Bachelor’s degree followed by just an Engineering Graduate Diploma.

Things To Consider Regarding The Length Of Study In Australia

All that is taken into account when determining the “two academic years of study” is the course’s normal length. If it takes you longer to finish the course, you will only receive credit for the regular amount of time. You will only receive credit for the first 1.5 years of the programme, for instance, if it takes you an additional year to complete it. Credit is only provided when you have successfully passed; subjects in which you have failed will not be taken into account.

Finally, only courses taken at approved Australian universities or educational institutions that are authorised to award these degrees and that are listed on CRICOS (the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) will be taken into consideration.
