The GMAT i.e Graduate Management Admission Test, is the world’s most famous standardized, multi-choice entrance test for admission to international MBA programs in universities all over the world, particularly English speaking countries like USA, Canada, etc. It lasts for 3 and a half hours and the maximum score is 800 marks. In the GMAT syllabus and eligibility for different students, the syllabus remains the same though eligibility may vary. For each question you answer correctly, the next question is of a higher difficulty level. Various business schools across the world acknowledge and consider this test for admitting new students and set a predetermined score as cut-off for the same, which students have to meet. The GMAT syllabus is divided into four sections.
These four sections of the GMAT syllabus are-
- Analytical Writing
- Integrated Reasoning
- Quantitative Aptitude Section
- Verbal Reasoning Section
Exam Pattern |GMAT Syllabus
The exam pattern for GMAT is divided among the above-mentioned four sections of Writing, Reasoning, Verbal and Quantitative skills that make up the GMAT exam syllabus. It is a computer-based test which is made up of both objective and subjective questions with a sum total of 91 questions. It is advised to practice hard for this test and download the GMAT syllabus PDF and practice paper well in advance.
Let us now take a detailed look at the GMAT syllabus and its four sections-
Verbal Reasoning (VR):
The Verbal Reasoning or Verbal Ability section of the GMAT exam syllabus consists of 36 questions which the student has to complete within a timeframe of 65 minutes. This section has 3 different types of questions which are- Reading comprehension,Critical reasoning and Sentence correction.
To score decent marks in these sections, students should be through and well-versed with their Idioms, Logical Predication, Verb Tense, Pronouns, Parallelism, Subject-Verb Agreement, Diction, Grammatical Construction, etc.
Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) | GMAT Syllabus
In this section of the GMAT syllabus for MBA, students have to tackle just one topic or question within 30 minutes that requires them to analyze the logic of the given argument in the question and write an essay to explain the argument and its logic in detail. This section tests not only their writing skills but also their critical thinking. An important thing to remember while attempting this question is that you have to critically analyze the given argument only and not write your own views about it.
Integrated Reasoning (IR)
The integrated reasoning section of the GMAT syllabus for MBA has 12 questions to be answered within 30 minutes on themes related to data analysis and problem solving in a data-driven business environment. In these questions you will be provided with information from multiple sources and asked to make decisions. It has 4 types of questions-
- Multi-source reasoning – In these types of questions which are a part of the GMAT portion, you will have to combine and analyze information from multiple sources to answer.
- Graphics interpretation – The problem will be posed in the form of a graph or image which you have to analyze and solve.
- Two-part analysis – The question’s answer will have a 2 part solution that you have to arrive at by critically analyzing the inter-related questions.
- Table analysis – Data will be given in the tabular form which you have to interpret to answer the given questions.
A single question may be divided into sub-parts of this question. You will have to solve all to get the full marks for the question and move on to the next question.
Quantitative Reasoning | GMAT Syllabus
The Quantitative Reasoning i.e Quants section of the GMAT portion tests your numerical ability and the ability to solve data-related problems. It consists of basic mathematical questions taught till the 10 standard i.e secondary school, like Geometry, Algebra, Arithmetic, etc. It consists of 31 questions to be answered in 62 minutes. It consists of the following types of questions- problem solving i.e testing your ability to solve numerical sums or problems and data sufficiency in which you have to look at the given data and judge its sufficiency to solve the problem.
