Post-Graduation Work Permit In Canada (PGWP) – A Guide

Michigan State University Admissions

If you are a student and have been studying in Canada, there is a good chance that you will want to stay in this country after graduation. Canada attracts many international students each year due to its reputation as a global leader in education and research. The post-graduation work permit in Canada is designed for internationally trained professionals who want to stay in the country after they graduate from a Canadian post-secondary institution. This program allows students who have graduated from an eligible program of study to apply for an open work permit that can be used immediately after graduation until the expiry date specified on their study permit. A post-graduate work permit holder can apply for all types of jobs in Canada including professional jobs that require licensing or certification under provincial or territorial legislation (for example, doctors).

Eligibility Criteria For Post-graduation Work Permit In Canada

  1. To Apply For Work Permit After Study In Canada, You Must Have –
  • A valid study permit
  • Proof of having completed full-time studies at an eligible institution in Canada (such as a copy of your diploma or official transcripts) or proof that the course is complete (for example, a letter from the school stating the date by which you must complete the program).
  1. Graduated From A Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
  • You must have graduated from a designated learning institution.
  • A list of designated learning institutions can be found on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website.
  1. Studied Full-Time, In Most Cases
  • To be eligible for a post-graduation work permit in Canada, you should be a full-time student during each academic session
  • Full-time status is defined as passing six or more credits per term
  • Doctoral students must pass nine or more credits per term to be considered full-time
  • PhD programs require at least six credits of coursework per semester, which must be completed within two years of the student’s arrival in Canada
  • You can maintain your full-time student status by taking online courses if you’re unable to enrol in classes on campus due to medical reasons or because your program is only offered on campus
  • You can also maintain your full-time student status by working part-time while enrolled as long as it doesn’t interfere with your studies
  • If you are taking a leave of absence from your studies and it is longer than 180 days, you will lose your status as a full-time student and won’t be able to apply for a post-graduation work permit in Canada until after the end of this time period
  • It doesn’t matter if you have applied for an extension through your school or not. You can only start working after completing the required number of credits
  • If there’s enough time remaining before finishing all program requirements, you can go back home if necessary, but still, keep studying here as long as you meet all other requirements listed above!
  1. Post-graduation Work Permit In Canada Expiration Date
  • If your program of study is less than 8 months then you will not be eligible for the PGWP program
  • You will receive a work permit for a period equivalent to the length of your course, provided it is less than two years but more than eight months
  • Only if your course is for two years or longer, a three-year work visa will be issued

PGWP Application Requirements

  • Before applying for a post-graduation work permit in Canada you need to have completed and passed your program of study
  • It is also necessary to have received written confirmation from the educational authority that your degree, diploma or certificate is eligible to be awarded a work permit after studying in Canada
  • You must apply for your post-graduation work permit within 180 days of receiving written confirmation (for example, a transcript or an official letter) from your school that you have met the requirements for completing your academic program
  • At the time of application, you should also submit proof that you have paid all applicable tuition fees; you have paid all applicable student fees; and you are in good standing with the institution (for example, there are no outstanding debts)

PGWP Application Information

As per the official website of the government of Canada, the application details for the post-graduation work permit in Canada are as follows.

  • There is a price of CAD 255 (the base fee is CAD 155 and the “Open Work Permit Holder” fee is CAD 100)
  • You must pay CAD 605 to reinstate your student status and post-study work permit in Canada
  • Online application processing takes 163 days
  • Paper-based applications take 146 days to process

Conclusion

If you have met all the requirements and your post-graduation work permit in Canada application has been approved, you will be issued a work permit for up to three years. You can use this time to build your skills and experience in Canada or apply for permanent residence through the Express Entry system. In a lifetime, students are only eligible for one post-study work visa in Canada.
