About

The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) is a performing arts school located in Liverpool, England. It was founded in 1996 by Sir Paul McCartney and Mark Featherstone-Witty to provide education in the performing arts, including music, dance, theatre, and technical production. The construction of the building and the school took seven years and £20 million to complete.

 

LIPA provides three Foundation Certificate study programmes in acting, music technology, dance, and popular music in addition to 11 full-time BA (Hons) degrees in a variety of performing arts disciplines. LIPA also provides full-time, one-year master's degree programmes in costume design and acting (company). The Federation of Drama Schools counts it as a member. The Institute opened ‘LIPA 4-19’, a part-time performing arts school for children aged 4 to 19, in September 2003. Ever since the opening of this institution, there have been partner academies and satellite schools also established. In 2014, LIPA opened a primary free school, and in 2016, it opened a sixth-form free college.

Facilities

The institution is housed in a purpose-built facility with state-of-the-art equipment and modern teaching spaces. When studying at LIPA, students will have access to a wide range of facilities, including performance spaces, studios, technical facilities, costume and set design workshops, and a library and resource centre, which provide them with the necessary resources and support to develop their skills and pursue their passions in the performing arts. Teaching and Practice Rooms - These are for practising and teaching. Many of its courses are available through three large rehearsal rooms, three medium rehearsal rooms, six tiny instruction rooms for music, eight small band rooms, and ten piano rooms. Students can use a variety of instruments, including amplification modules made by Soundcraft, Mackie, and Orange, pianos made by Roland, Yamaha, and Nord, guitars made by Fret-king, drumkits made by Yamaha, and Zildjian cymbals. The institute also contains the John Lennon Lecture Theatre, which was recently renovated and can accommodate 120 people for lectures, master classes, and seminars. 

 

Library - The Learning Resources Centre (LRC), a creative and performing arts library, is welcoming and informal. The LRC has a sizable library of specialised books, e-books, music scores, DVDs, electronic resources, print periodicals, and more. IT facilities with specialised software, such as CAD and Sibelius, are routinely updated. Offering subject-specific lectures, one-on-one and drop-in sessions, and housing ICT and study skills.
