Placements

On the academic job market, the university takes great pride in their job placement. Washington University's placement rate for students is among the best in the field; they put roughly 90% of students and the majority of them in tenure-track posts. The department has conferred 37 doctorates since 1998. Of those students, 31 obtained tenure-track positions. Bates, Denison, Florida State, Harvard, Iowa State, Milliken, Notre Dame, Portland, Princeton, Rhodes, San Diego State, St. Louis, Texas A&M, University of Georgia, University of Kansas, University of Minnesota, University of Missouri, University of Pittsburgh, University of Southern Illinois, University of Southern California, University of Southern Maine, West Point, and Wright State University are among the institutions on the list of universities that offer tenure-track jobs to WUSTL students.

The Department of Political Science assists students seeking employment by paying for application packet copies and postage and organizing the creation and distribution of dossiers (including a cover letter from the Department Chair). After scheduling a mock interview that has been approved by the department chair, the director of graduate studies, and the dissertation advisor, a student is qualified for these services. Graduate students should schedule formal placement initiatives to start as early as possible in the year they intend to enter the market.
