Program Overview

Overweight and obesity have been associated with physiological and psychological ill health and a number of links have been demonstrated for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cancers, polycystic ovary syndrome and depression. During the Covid-19 crisis there have also been emerging links between excess weight, obesity and the risk and severity of the infection.

Personal costs of overweight and obesity, but also costs to the health and wider economy, are substantial and growing on an annual basis. The management of excess weight and prevention of obesity is therefore an important tool in the kit of improving public health with diet, nutrition, exercise and behaviour change techniques. Students will also develop an increasing awareness of societal perspectives on obesity and weight management strategies and policies.

Course Content
This course considers the evidence and skills needed for obesity and weight management prevention, treatment and management in an ever-more complex world. This is addressed by providing a comprehensive introduction and advanced training to build a skill set considering diet and nutrition, dietary analysis, exercise, exercise plans, public health, psychology and behavioural theory, and body composition perspectives based on most current research findings.

Our research methods sessions in addition to topic-related sessions will develop your critical thinking skills to become a strong and grounded evidence-based obesity and weight management practitioner. Our theoretical sessions are completed by practical sessions in the food skills laboratory and exercise science laboratory where you can take a hands-on approach. You will also be taught how to use dietary assessment software to analyse clients food records and to develop your own weight loss recipes and meal plans.

We take pride in our strong record of student support with tutorials and our virtual learning environment. Unique to Chester is the Chester Blend as we combine both face-to-face and online teaching, and synchronous and asynchronous sessions to give our students the best learning experience.

If you want to focus on the development of one particular area you can decide to take one of our modules as standalone module for your continuous professional development (CPD). We are currently investigating the option of having individual modules CPD-accredited by the Association for Nutrition.

As we recognise that it is important to add valuable practical experience to strong theoretical foundations, we are currently in the process of talking to a number of potential placement providers in the obesity and weight management sector that tie in with the content delivered on the programme. For those students not being resident in the Chester area, we are happy to provide support with finding placement or volunteering opportunities closer to their place of residence.
