Program Overview

Advanced knowledge of grammar and phonology coupled with practical application and exploration of English in context – e.g. language and identity, discourse analysis, English in education – forms the core of our MA course. You will be given expert supervision and guidance in completing your own research-based thesis on a specialist topic of your choosing.

Course Content
Integral to the course is the advanced study of syntax / morphology and phonetics / phonology combined with application of knowledge about structures of English in use (corpus linguistics, critical discourse analysis, language and identity) and research methods. These core areas of study are supplemented with options which may include the role of English in education (e.g. phonics and grammar in the classroom), English in literary texts (cognitive stylistics) and contemporary language change.
