MSc Economics and Management

Curriculum overview

We are ranked #2 in the world for social science and management, and the programme is founded in LSE’s tradition for academic excellence. 

 

The curriculum is designed around four compulsory core courses, and you can also customise your programme according to your own interests and career goals with a choice of optional elective courses from leading academic departments across at LSE in managerial economics, accounting, finance, and other management topics. 

 

You will complete the programme with a 6,000 word extended essay during the end of Lent Term, which will enable you to specialise with in-depth knowledge in your specific area of interest.                 

 

You will attend an Introductory course before the start of the programme.

 

Introductory course

Introductory Course in Mathematics and Statistics
Provides the essential mathematical, statistical, economic and econometric background for the core Economics courses in this programme.

You will also receive teaching in Stata and Accounting during the Introductory course.

Firms and Markets
Introduces microeconomic analysis within management, focusing on market competition, capabilities and internal organisation and links between strategy and structure. Particular emphasis is placed during this course on both developing analytical skills and on showing how these analytical skills can be deployed in practical strategic settings.

 

Econometric Methods
Focuses on empirical research in economics and gives students the opportunity to work with Stata and other econometric software in analysing actual data sets, reproducing and criticising results in previous work and learning the actual practice of econometrics as undertaken by the best applied economists.

 

Corporate Finance A*
Investigates corporate finance topics including capital budgeting techniques, the driving forces behind capital structure, debt and equity finance decisions, and the implications of those choices.

 

Extended Essay*
An independent research project of 6,000 words and based on one of the two option courses taken.

Entry requirements for MSc Economics and Management
 

• first class honours (1st) degree or equivalent in Economics. See international entry requirements
• GMAT or GRE is required from all applicants except those with (or expecting) a UK undergraduate or master's degree (GRE is preferred) Find out more about GRE/GMAT
• no previous work experience is required
• you may also have to provide evidence of your English proficiency, although you do not need to provide this at the time of your application to LSE.

Every graduate student is charged a fee for their programme.

The fee covers registration and examination fees payable to the School, lectures, classes and individual supervision, lectures given at other colleges under intercollegiate arrangements and, under current arrangements, membership of the Students' Union. It does not cover living costs or travel or fieldwork.
