Engineering Systems MEng (Hons)

The Engineering Systems course takes an interdisciplinary approach to complex systems and the analysis of interactions to enable the successful realization and use of engineered systems in industry and globally.
 

Over four years, you will develop the professional engineering skills required, with a focus on innovative and sustainable solutions to current and future problems in engineering systems.
 

Individual and group engineering design projects demonstrate your expertise to future employers, whilst the fourth year, at Master’s level, helps you transition from study to professional practice.

• Students will be trained to understand and analyse the broader context in which the engineering system is used, integrating processes and information in a holistic way, dealing with the challenges of complex systems interactions

Course content
 

You will develop a strong technical background in the key subjects which require the integration of concepts across the breadth of engineering, as well as management studies and engineering design which are also integral parts of the course.
 

Year 1
 

Build a firm foundation in mathematics, engineering, physics, electronics and computing, with our shared engineering first year.
 

Year 2
 

Students will specialise in key aspects of engineering systems, where learning includes modules on signals & communications, electronics (including electromagnetics), mechatronics and systems, data analysis for engineers, and sensor systems and instrumentation.
 

Year 3
 

Students deepen their expertise with applied modules in today’s engineering systems including control engineering, advanced programming, system engineering and Integration, cyber security systems and the Internet of Things (IoT), Networks and Real-Time systems.
 

Year 4
 

Transition from academic study to professional practice with a major integrated final year research design project (mentored by industry expert when possible). Further advanced modules cover systems engineering practice in society, robotics, imaging and vision, digital communication and signal processing and machine learning and two optional modules can be selected as well.

  GCSE:

  A minimum of grade 4 (C) in English Language and Mathematics in addition to other outlined requirements.

  In addition to our other entry requirements, City also accepts T-levels with the following grades:

  • T-Level in Design, Surveying and Construction. Must have an overall “Distinction” with at least B in the core. Must have “Distinction” in the Occupational specialism of Civil Engineering
     

  Contextual offers

  We apply a contextual admissions process for UK undergraduate applicants who have been in care or are the first in their family to enter Higher Education. Those who are eligible may receive a conditional offer with reduced entry requirements, typically two grades lower for A-levels and one grade (or eight tariff points) for BTEC or mixed qualifications.

  Mixed qualifications

  Typically the only scenario where we make conditional offers expressed as UCAS tariff points is when an applicant presents mixed qualifications, most typically a combination of A-levels and a BTEC qualification.

  In this instance, we may make a tariff point offer to present the applicant with more flexibility on equivalencies. In this case, please be aware that we may still ask for a specific score across certain qualifications and subjects. E.g. 'This offer is conditional on you achieving 128 tariff points. This must include A-level Mathematics at grade B.'
   

  Subject exclusions

  We do not accept General Studies and Critical Thinking. These subjects will not be included in any conditional offer we make.
   

  Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

  We welcome applications from students who are completing relevant EPQ Projects. Whilst we recognise the value of these projects in preparing students for independent learning at university, the EPQ is unlikely to form part of any conditional offer we make.

  The EPQ will also not lower the specifics of any conditional offer we choose to make. We will consider the EPQ as part of the holistic assessment of the application and it could be used to form part of our final decision at Confirmation stage.
   

  AS levels

  We recognise that there will be differences of opportunity varying by school and college. As not all students will have the opportunity to sit AS Level exams, it is unlikely we will include AS Level grades in any offer we choose to make. Where students have completed an AS Level subject, we will consider this as part of the holistic assessment of the application and it could be used to form part of our final decision at Confirmation stage.

  6.0 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each component.

The cost of studying at City, University of London varies largely depending on the type of university and the degree chosen. More often than not, humanities, arts, and education courses are less expensive than degrees in medical, engineering, or management. Furthermore, students who choose to study at the postgraduate level typically pay higher tuition fees, which again vary depending on the programme chosen.

Most universities provide scholarships or financial aid to students in order to help them offset their tuition costs. Students should be aware that additional course fees and incidental expenses may not be included in tuition. On average, international students can expect to pay £20,500 annually, to study in City, University of London.

Career prospects are excellent and build on City’s outstanding reputation of educating engineers to degree level for a century and more.  Our engineering systems graduates are equipped with the skills demanded not only for the present but the future, and we are proud of the success they enjoy at the forefront of their profession, working in the UK and across the world.
 

Our graduates shall get opportunities to work as a design and development engineer, or a systems integrator, or a systems engineer. Aerospace, automotive, consumer appliances, defence, manufacturing, or renewable energy sectors are few sectors that will welcome our engineers.
