It is one of the three campuses of the University of Illinois system, alongside the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the University of Illinois Chicago. It was established in 1969 as Sangamon State University and was later renamed the University of Illinois at Springfield in 1995 before adopting its current name in 2008.
