About

Located in College Station, Texas, Texas A&M University (Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University) is a public land-grant research institution, also known as Texas A&M, A&M, or TAMU. It was founded in 1876, and in 1948 it was given the title of "flagship institution" for the system. It is also the only university in Texas to have designations as a land grant, marine grant, and space grant institution simultaneously.

 

The school grew over the ensuing decades, reaching its peak enrollment during World War II before going through its first significant post-war enrollment stagnation. Under the leadership of President James Earl Rudder, enrollment rose once more in the 1960s. Under his direction, the institution de-segregated went co-ed and removed the requirement to join the Corps of Cadets for students while joining the university. The Texas Legislature renamed the school to its current name in 1963 to reflect the institution's expanded activities and academic offerings. After being accepted, the university became a member of the Association of American Universities in 2001.

 

On October 4, 1876, the institution opened its doors as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (A.M.C.) in accordance with the terms of the 1862 Morrill Land-Grant Act. It was the first publicly funded university in the state. According to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education as of 2021, it is classified as falling under the category of "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity."
