About

Situated in Stony Brook in the city of New York, Stony Brook University (SBU) is a public research university. It is the largest public university in the state of New York, with a campus that spans over 1,454 acres. The university is often known as the ‘State University of New York’ at Stony Brook. The university is one of the two founding institutions of the State University of New York system, along with the University at Buffalo. The college moved to Stony Brook in 1962 after being founded in Oyster Bay, Long Island, 65 years earlier as the State University College. Stony Brook was chosen in 2001 to join the Association of American Universities, an elite association of important North American research universities. It belongs to the bigger Universities Research Association as well. It is listed as belonging to the category "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity."

 

A total of 26,000+ students, including 18,000+ undergraduate and 8,700+ graduate students, make up the student body. Sororities, fraternities, and nearly 300 officially recognized student clubs and organizations are among the many student-run groups at SBU. At the university, the budgeting of the undergraduate student activity fee, which supports the majority of student-run organizations on campus, is entrusted to the Undergraduate Student Government. The budget for the graduate student activity fee is managed by the Graduate Student Organization, which also offers a range of funding options, including programming, student services, and funding for departmental and student organizations.

 

On October 19th in 2012, the university celebrated the opening of the Campus Recreation Center, a cutting-edge 85,000-square-foot building. The new building is dedicated to the health and wellness of the students, faculty, and staff and is situated between the Stony Brook Student Union and the Indoor Sports Complex. With more than 2,000 visitors per day on average, it has emerged as the hub of activity on campus.

 

Stony Brook University facilities have three levels for intramural activities, more than 100 pieces of cardiovascular equipment, practice and competition areas for athletic organizations, and open enjoyment. A three-court gymnasium, a multi-activity court for basketball, soccer, roller hockey, volleyball, and badminton, three wellness studios, almost 17,000 square feet of combined free weights, fitness, cardio, and stretching space, a 1/10-mile track, locker rooms and showers, sports club storage rooms, and wireless Internet access are among the amenities. The facility offers over 250 students employment possibilities and more than 60 exercise sessions each week.
