Oklahoma City University was founded in 1904 as Epworth University by the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce. It changed its name to Oklahoma City College in 1924 and to Oklahoma City University in 1951.
It is located in the Uptown district of Oklahoma City, near the state capitol and downtown.
