About

Adelphi University (AU) is a private university located in Garden City, New York. Additionally, the university has locations in Suffolk County, the Hudson Valley, and Manhattan. For students who live far away, there is also a virtual, online campus. It was initially established as a preparatory school in 1863 and was formally chartered in 1869. In 1963 the institution received its university status from the New York State Board of Regents. It is the oldest higher education facility in Long Island's suburbs and Adelphi University’s acceptance rate stands at 74% with 7,520+ graduate and undergraduate students enrolled. There is a great learning environment for students with a student-to-faculty ratio of 12:1 and average class sizes of 20 students at the undergraduate level and 13 students at the graduate level. The university also has a huge chain of partnerships in around 120 countries with providers outside the university that offer opportunities to students who plan on studying abroad.

Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program is housed at the university's School of Social Work. The Woman-to-Woman Hotline, a free and private service to assist women with breast cancer, was the program's original name when it started in 1980. It is the second-oldest breast cancer hotline in the country, and more than 100 specially trained volunteers provide both information and emotional support to both men and women with the disease. Along with support groups, educational programs, and individual therapy, there are licensed social workers, bilingual personnel that speak Spanish, and support staff.

Facilities

The athletic teams that represent AU are known as the Panthers. The Panthers have been a part of the Northeast-10 Conference since 2009 and participate in all sports at the NCAA Division II level. In three separate sports, the Panthers have won 18 NCAA Division II National Championships. An NCAA Division II-record ten championships have been achieved by the women's lacrosse team, including three straight National Championships in 2009, 2010, and 2011 as well as back-to-back championships in 2014 and 2015, and most recently in 2019. The men's soccer squad won the national championship in 1974. In track and field, they have also won a lot of individual national titles. The AU Panthers have become a force in the East Region since joining the Northeast-10. The Panthers also won the 2013 Northeast-10 Presidents' Cup in just their fourth season in the league. Each year, the Northeast-10 awards its overall top athlete with the Presidents' Cup. The university earning the highest overall points from all of its programs competing in conference championships receives the distinction.
