About

The University of Sunderland is a public research university located in Sunderland, North East England. In 1901, Sunderland Technical College was founded as a municipal training institution and in 1992, it was given university status. The university has had a strong connection with the city of Sunderland, and in 2022 it marked its 30th anniversary as a university. Since Benedict Biscop constructed St. Peter's Church and the monastery there in 674 AD, Sunderland has been a significant centre for education. North of the Alps, the largest scriptorium was located in St. Peter's Church. The Codex Amiatinus, the earliest Latin translation still in existence, was created at St. Peter's Church. The university’s St. Peter's has transformed this area into the Sir Tom Cowie Campus.
