Overview

About

The University of Hull (also known as Hull University or UOH) is a public research university located in Kingston upon Hull, a city in Yorkshire's East Riding, England. It was established initially as the University College Hull in 1927. The Hull York Medical School, a joint venture with the University of York, is housed on the main campus of the university, which is in Hull. Prince Albert, the Duke of York, lay the University Institution Hull foundation stone in 1927 when it was still an external college of the University of London. Thomas Ferens and G. F. Grant, two local donors, as well as Hull City Council provided land for the college's construction. The first 14 departments in the arts and pure sciences started a year later with 39 students. At the time, the college only had one structure, which is today known as the Venn building (after the mathematician John Venn, who was born in Hull). The university's administrative centre is presently housed in the structure.

The royal charter for the college was granted on September 6, 1954. It became the third university in Yorkshire and the fourteenth in England as a result of having the authority to grant degrees on its own. The twenty-six years that passed between the founding of the university college and the awarding of the charter were the shortest of their kind in England's prior history of establishing universities. After the charter was approved, applications to attend the new university doubled within a year. The university is popular for developing liquid-crystal technology in terms of research and specific research in categories such as social justice, maritime history and environmental technology.
