According to the Times Higher Education's "intensity" ranking for REF2014, which mapped university performance against the percentage of eligible personnel reported, UOE was ranked 19th overall among traditional UK universities. In addition to being crowned University of the Year at the Times Higher Education Awards in 2018 and receiving a Gold rating for teaching excellence from the TEF since 2017, UOE is also recognised as an outstanding international research-intensive university by the REF. The TEF Panel recognised remarkable levels of satisfaction with teaching, academic assistance, assessment, and feedback among students from all backgrounds who continued and progressed to highly skilled employment or further study.

 

The university was in the top 20 for international orientation in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020, which placed it between positions 251 and 300. In the 2020 QS World University Rankings, the university came in at number 370. For the sixth consecutive year, it was ranked in the top 15 for overall student satisfaction in the National Student Survey among English mainstream universities (defined by the university as non-specialist higher education institutions having a survey population of at least 500). Course Rankings:

UOE has consistently placed first for research in politics, and it did so again in the categories of politics and international studies in the Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF2014). Using the Times Higher Education’s (THE) "intensity" metric subjects like sociology, economics, business and management, art history, philosophy, law, history, and sport and exercise sciences ranked among the top 25 disciplines in the UK. In 2019, THE rated Essex’s subjects 50th for social sciences and 51st for law. The university is also ranked 33rd for politics and international relations, 47th for sociology, 101st-150th for economics and econometrics, 101st-150th for linguistics, 151st-200th for English language and literature, and 151st-200th for law and legal studies in the QS World University Rankings 2019 by subject.
