MGeol Applied and Environmental Geology with Year in Industrty

Year 1

You will have a broad introduction to geoscience and discover the role of geology and geoscientists in today's society.

All four of our geoscience subjects have the same first year so you can transfer between subjects before Year 2 if you wish to. This is the same as Year 1 of the BSc.

Year 2

You will develop your understanding of the fundamental aspects of geoscience. Modules in mineral deposits and ore suite reports will begin your route into specialisation.

This is the same as Year 2 of the BSc. At the end of Year 2 your performance must meet a set level to continue on the MGeol. If this is not the case, you will transfer to the BSc and complete your degree in three years.

Optional Year in Industry

If you want to, you can take a year out between your second and third years and spend that time working in industry.

 

If you choose to do this, you’ll take a module in your second year that will help you to find a work placement and prepare you for the workplace. Throughout your placement, there will be structured support available to you from specialist staff at the University.

 

You’ll benefit from real-world experience in a commercial setting, enabling you to make an easier transition from studying to working after you finish your degree. It will also strengthen your CV significantly in preparation for entering the graduate labour market. On top of all this, you’ll be paid a salary for your placement.

Final Year

In your final year, you will carry out your own research project, often in collaboration with a company. It may involve fieldwork around the globe and will apply the scientific approach to solving problems of practical importance to industry. Specialist taught modules will equip you for a high-level career in industry or research.

• A-levels: AAB including at least two from: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Geography, Geology, Maths, Use of Maths or Physics. 
• EPQ with A-levels: AAB + EPQ at grade B. A-level subjects to include two from Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Geography, Geology, Maths, Use of Maths or Physics. 
• GCSE: Grade C/4 in English Language and Maths.
• Access to HE Diploma: Pass science diploma with a minimum of 45 credits at level 3, 30 of which must be at Distinction. To include Physics, Chemistry and Maths Level 3 credits. 
• International Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma with 32 points, including 5 points in two science subjects at HL. Minimum of 3 in HL Maths, or 4 in SL Maths, or 5 in Maths Studies required if grade C/4 not held at GCSE. Minimum of 4 in English Language required if grade C/4 not held at GCSE.
• BTEC Nationals: Pass Diploma with DDD (Science Related). Please contact department regarding eligibility.
   

Selection Process
When considering your application, we will look for evidence that you will be able to fulfil the objectives of the course and achieve the standards required. We will take into account a range of factors including previous exam results.

 

If you receive an offer you will be invited to visit the department.

 

English Language Requirements
IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. If your first language is not English, you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. If you do not yet meet our requirements, our English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) offers a range of courses to help you to improve your English to the necessary standard.

UK Students

Starting in 2022

• £9,250 in your first year. Tuition fees are subject to government regulations and may change in future years
• Year in Industry: your fee will be 15% of the full-time tuition fee that applies in that year

If you are resident outside the UK and the Republic of Ireland, you will need to pay a deposit of £3,000 to secure your place. This will be subtracted from your total tuition fee.

 

Additional costs

Please note that you will need to buy a Casio FX83GT calculator (approximately £6). This is not included in your tuition fee.

International Students

Starting in 2022 

• £21,750 per year
• Year Abroad: £5,437.50, which is 25% of the full-time tuition fee
• Year in Industry: £3,262.50, which is 15% of the full-time tuition fee

You will need to pay a deposit of £3,000 to secure your place. This will be subtracted from your total tuition fee.

 

From 2022 onwards, EU nationals will pay the International fee. If you are an EU national with settled or pre-settled status under the EU settlement scheme, you may qualify for the UK fee (subject to criteria).
