This course prepares you for technical and product development roles in the food industry with a strong emphasis on nutrition. You learn about food production and nutrition in an applied setting, developing core technical skills in our state-of-the-art development kitchens, food and nutrition labs and sensory suite. You apply these practical skills to live briefs with commercial applications provided by our industrial partners, such as Morrisons and Cranswick PLC, as well as in optional placements.

  Work placements

  This course involves an optional industry placement, which can run for six to twelve months. These provide you with valuable industry experience and contacts.
   

  Live projects

  In the professional and academic skills strand of this course you will apply your learning to academic research and commercial briefs. Examples include developing tasty healthy alternatives, understanding the impact of food labelling on consumers, developing a food product for a major food retailer partner or supporting local SMEs with food quality assurance systems.
   

  Networking opportunities

  With strong industry and alumni ties, placement opportunities and commercial briefs, this course provides ample opportunity for networking.

Normally an honours degree at 2:2 or above in a science or recognised equivalent qualification in science. For example, food science, nutrition, health and wellbeing, exercise science or biological sciences are all relevant disciplines.
 

Applicants with an honours degree in an alternative discipline and relevant work experience are considered on an individual basis.
 

We consider enquiries from those who have substantial experience working in relevant positions in the food industry or in nutrition related positions but do not have the normal entry requirements. We may invite these potential students for an interview to discuss their particular background, experience and qualifications.
 

Work Experience Route

If English is not your first language you will need an IELTS 6.5 score with a minimum of 6.0 in all skills or equivalent.
 

Non Work Experience Route

If English is not your first language you will need an IELTS 6.0 score with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills or equivalent.
 

All applicants are required to gain a recognised English language qualification before entering any of our courses. For pre-sessional English programmes and courses below degree level, this must be one from a list of UK government recognised tests, most commonly IELTS. For degree level programmes (bachelors, masters and PhD), we consider a wide range of international qualifications. International Foundation Programme

 

The following qualifications will be considered for entry on to our International Foundation Programme.

• IELTS certificate from an approved centre (IELTS score of 4.5 or above)

• Good high school graduation grades which include maths
   

Undergraduate programmes
 

The following qualifications will be considered for entry on to undergraduate programmes

• two GCE/VCE A level passes

• High School Leaving Certificate, which is recognised as equivalent to A level standard

• other international qualifications gained after 13 years of secondary/further education

Sheffield Hallam welcomes applications from international school students taking the International Baccalaureate Diploma and those achieving 28 points or more will usually be successful in obtaining an offer of a place on our undergraduate programmes. Postgraduate taught programmes (masters)

• a first degree or professional qualification recognised as being equivalent to degree standard
