Placements

Veterinary medicine students at the Royal Veterinary College are required to undertake a minimum of 26 weeks of extramural studies (EMS) throughout their degree. EMS provides students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in a variety of veterinary settings, such as small animal practices, equine clinics, and farm animal practices. Students can also choose to undertake placements in zoos, wildlife centres, and research laboratories.

The RVC has strong links with a large number of veterinary practices across the UK, and students can choose from a wide range of placements to suit their interests and career aspirations. The college also has a dedicated EMS team, which supports students in finding suitable placements and ensures that they meet the necessary standards of clinical competence. In addition to EMS placements, the Royal Veterinary College placements team offers rotations at the RVC's own small animal and equine hospitals, as well as placements at external referral centres and practices.

The RVC's small animal hospital is one of the largest and most advanced veterinary hospitals in Europe, and students can gain experience in a wide range of clinical specialities, including internal medicine, surgery, cardiology, and neurology. The equine hospital is also a world-class facility, offering students the opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of equine care, including surgery, diagnostic imaging, and critical care.
