Film and Media Foundation Year

at Northumbria University

The course has been designed in a collaborative approach to provide a curriculum that spans across our Arts, Design and Social Sciences department. It brings together expertise from our Film and TV, Production and Journalism teams in order to augment your learning experience.

 

You will develop a portfolio of short, practical filmed projects, explore the use of genre in film and television and examine the impact of mass media communication on our society.  From developing ideas, to working in post-production you will be hands-on from the beginning. Practical workshops and critical analysis are developed hand in hand. No matter what aspect you’re working on, you’ll begin to develop your own graduate portfolio which can be enhanced upon at level four.

 

Assessment methods are designed to reflect the diverse nature of the programme, varying from traditional essay writing and examinations, to portfolio work and individual and group presentations.

From a combination of acceptable Level 3 qualifications which may include: A-level, T Level, BTEC Diplomas/Extended Diplomas, Scottish and Irish Highers, Access to HE Diplomas, or the International Baccalaureate.

GCSE Requirements:

 

Applicants will need Maths and English Language at minimum grade 4/C, or an equivalent.

English Language Requirements:

 

International applicants should have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with 5.5 in each component (or an approved equivalent*).

Fees and Funding 2022/23 Entry

UK Fee in Year 1: £9,250

* The maximum tuition fee that we are permitted to charge for UK students is set by government. Tuition fees may increase in each subsequent academic year of your course, these are subject to government regulations and in line with inflation.

EU Fee in Year 1: £16,500

 

International Fee in Year 1: £16,500

The foundation year has been designed to provide a seamless transition onto one of our level four courses outlined in the Course Overview, and so you will have a focus on subject-specific modules that will ensure optimal preparation for your upcoming course.

 

Whilst learning the skills and knowledge you will need to continue onto an undergraduate degree, and a professional career, you will also build interpersonal skills by joining a vibrant and creative community that encourages collaborations and idea sharing across our film and media courses.
