English at Northumbria enjoys international recognition for the quality of teaching and research, and our modules are routinely praised by external examiners. Our publications in English and Creative Writing are ranked 15th in the country for their quality, by the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. Our staff actively explore and shape what the disciplines of linguistic and literary study mean in the 21st century, and our expertise and enthusiasm feed directly into what we teach and what you learn.

 

In linguistics, Northumbria has wide-ranging expertise in cognitive linguistics, semantics, pragmatics and English grammar. In literature, our staff research topics from Shakespeare to the modern graphic novel.

From a combination of acceptable Level 3 qualifications which may include: A-level, T Level, BTEC Diplomas/Extended Diplomas, Scottish and Irish Highers, Access to HE Diplomas, or the International Baccalaureate.

English Language Requirements:

 

International applicants should have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with 5.5 in each component (or an approved equivalent*).

Fees and Funding 2022/23 Entry

UK Fee in Year 1: £9,250

* The maximum tuition fee that we are permitted to charge for UK students is set by government. Tuition fees may increase in each subsequent academic year of your course, these are subject to government regulations and in line with inflation.

EU Fee in Year 1: £16,500

 

International Fee in Year 1: £16,500

With highly honed skills in communication and analysis, you will be ready to hit the ground running once you start a career. In recent years, many of our graduates have developed successful careers in marketing, PR, media, journalism, communications, publishing, advertising, education (at various levels), local government, and in both public and private sectors. Others have gone on to postgraduate study.
