Design Foundation Year

The Design Foundation Year provides a broad curriculum of design modules, allowing you to explore a number of distinct, yet complementary disciplines and discover which you would like to pursue at Level 4 study. To prepare you for advancement into Level 4 and beyond, a year-long portfolio skills module will give you a solid grounding in the fundamental principles of design and professional presentation.

Throughout the course you will be exposed to a range of assessment formats including two and three dimensional solutions to problems, practice based submissions, essay writing, presentations and portfolio work. This focus on assessment strategy will enhance your creative design practice, allowing you to develop both general and discipline specific knowledge and understanding of design.

You will have the opportunity to demonstrate the depth and breadth of your newly-learned skills and knowledge in an end of year showcase that brings all the elements of the course work together.

Standard Entry

From a combination of acceptable Level 3 qualifications which may include: A-level, T Level, BTEC Diplomas/Extended Diplomas, Scottish and Irish Highers, Access to HE Diplomas, or the International Baccalaureate.

Subject Requirements:

There are no specific subject requirements for this course.

GCSE Requirements:

Applicants will need Maths and English Language at minimum grade 4/C, or an equivalent.

Additional Requirements:

International Qualifications:

We welcome applicants with a range of qualifications which may not match those shown above.

English Language Requirements:

International applicants should have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with 5.5 in each component (or an approved equivalent*).

Fees and Funding 2022/23 Entry

UK Fee in Year 1: £9,250

* The maximum tuition fee that we are permitted to charge for UK students is set by government. Tuition fees may increase in each subsequent academic year of your course, these are subject to government regulations and in line with inflation.

EU Fee in Year 1: £16,500

International Fee in Year 1: £16,500

The strong relationships and lasting partnerships that we have built with cultural and creative organisations such as BrandOpus, Fitch, GQ, H&M, Microsoft, Nike, Old Navy, Penguin Books Pentagram, Proctor and Gamble, River Island, Samsung and Unilever afford opportunities for you to engage in industry lectures and educational site visits. Progression onto one of our undergraduate degree programmes afford further opportunities to undertake an industry work placement or study abroad for a semester or full year.
