Overview

About

Located in the city of Leeds, Leeds Beckett University (LBU) is a public university. It has a history of nearly 200 years. The Leeds Mechanics Institute was established in 1824, marking the beginning of the university. When Leeds Polytechnic was established in 1970, it was a component of the Leeds Local Education Authority until 1 April 1989 when it separated to become an independent higher education institution. The organisation was given university status in 1992 and in September 2014 it received its current name.

The university has two campuses in Headingley and the city centre. LBU's Headingley campus is located about three miles from the city centre of Leeds and is surrounded by 100 acres of parkland. The city campus is in the heart of the city, distributed across several buildings around Woodhouse Lane. The City Campus is only a few minutes away from the First Direct Arena, the city's primary commercial centre. It is very well served by public transportation. On campus, the university offers a variety of activities and amenities to students. LBU's campus has everything a student needs, whether they want to spend extra time in the library, eat lunch with their friends or utilise the gym.

Numerous relationships in sports and culture have been formed by the university, both domestically and abroad. Like many universities in the UK and around the world, LBU maintains an open access repository that consists of an open access research archive and an OER repository, which is a collection of educational resources that are created on campus and are freely usable under a Creative Commons licence. The Leeds Beckett Students' Union, which is a member of the National Union of Students, serves as the institution's student government. It was ranked 39th nationally and the second best Students' Union in Leeds, according to student votes.
