When Leeds Polytechnic was established in 1970, it was a component of the Leeds Local Education Authority until 1 April 1989 when it separated to become an independent higher education institution. The university has two campuses in Headingley and the city centre. LBU's Headingley campus is located about three miles from the city centre of Leeds and is surrounded by 100 acres of parkland. Like many universities in the UK and around the world, LBU maintains an open access repository that consists of an open access research archive and an OER repository, which is a collection of educational resources that are created on campus and are freely usable under a Creative Commons licence. The Leeds Beckett Students' Union, which is a member of the National Union of Students, serves as the institution's student government. It was ranked 39th nationally and the second best Students' Union in Leeds, according to student votes.
