About

Located in the city of Leeds, Leeds Beckett University (LBU) is a public university. It has a history of nearly 200 years. The Leeds Mechanics Institute was established in 1824, marking the beginning of the university. When Leeds Polytechnic was established in 1970, it was a component of the Leeds Local Education Authority until 1 April 1989 when it separated to become an independent higher education institution. The organisation was given university status in 1992 and in September 2014 it received its current name.

The university has two campuses in Headingley and the city centre. LBU's Headingley campus is located about three miles from the city centre of Leeds and is surrounded by 100 acres of parkland. The city campus is in the heart of the city, distributed across several buildings around Woodhouse Lane. The City Campus is only a few minutes away from the First Direct Arena, the city's primary commercial centre. It is very well served by public transportation. On campus, the university offers a variety of activities and amenities to students.
