Courses are divided into modules. You will normally take modules totalling 360 credits.
There are options to switch to other courses in the Bioscience suite or to a four-year MSci after Year 1, subject to programme regulations.
Year 1
Required modules
You are required to take:
- Biochemistry (15 credits)
- Chemistry for the Biosciences (15 credits)
- Genetics & Molecular Biology (15 credits)
- Cell Biology & Neuroscience (15 credits)
- Fundamentals of Physiology & Anatomy (30 credits)
- Fundamentals of Pharmacology (15 credits)
- Skills for the Biosciences (15 credits)
Year 2
Required modules
You are required to take:
- Neuroscience (30 credits)
- Neuroscience & the Mind (15 credits)
- Physiology & Pharmacology of the Central Nervous System (15 credits)
- Essentials of Embryology (15 credits)
- Psychology 1 (15 credits)
- Molecular Basis of Gene Expression (15 credits)
Year 3
Required modules
In your final year you will choose one of the following pathways:
Option A: Developmental Neuroscience/Systems Neuroscience/ Neurodegeneration – with the emphasis on laboratory-based research.
You are required to take:
- Laboratory-based Research Project in Neuroscience (45 credits)
- Principles of Neurobiological Research (15 credits)
In addition, you are required to take one of the following two modules:
- Developmental Neurobiology (30 credits)
- Perspectives on Pain & Nervous System Disorders (30 credits)
- Option B: Neuroscience and Neuropsychology – includes a psychology research project (30 credits).
You are required to take:
- Cognitive Neuropsychology (30 credits)
- Research Methods & Statistics Psychology Project (30 credits)
- Pharmacology of Neurological & Psychiatric Disease (15 credits)
- Neuroendocrinology (15 credits)
As well as one of the following two options:
- Cellular & System Neuroscience (30 credits)
- Memory Mechanisms in Health & Disease (15 credits) and Imaging the Brain, Reading the Mind (15 credits)
Option C: A library-based research project – a broader range of lecture-based modules, with options to study the conduct of research and undertake laboratory practicals.
You are required to take at least one of the following modules:
- Neurosciences Literature-Based Research Project (15 credits)
- Project Design in Neuroscience (30 credits)
In addition, you must take sufficient credits to bring your total for the year to 120, from a range of optional modules, which may typically include:
- Cellular and Systems Neuroscience (30 credits)
- Neuroendocrinology (15 credits)
- Developmental Neurobiology (30 credits)
- Behavioural Sciences (15 credits)
- Perspectives on Pain & Nervous System Disorders (30 credits)
- Pharmacology of Neurological & Psychiatric Disease (15 credits)
- Experimental Topics in Neuroscience (15 credits)
- Memory Mechanism in Health & Disease (15 credits)
- Imaging the Brain, Reading the Mind (15 credits)
- An interdisciplinary approach to gender, sex and sexuality (15 credits)
