Moral Theory and Medical Ethics (30 credits)

This module will equipt you with a knowledge of key ethical theories, frameworks and principles that inform academic debates in medical and healthcare ethics, and enables them to use these tools to analyse practical moral problems in medicine and healthcare. It will also provides you with a practical understanding of the norms and conventions of academic argument and writing in applied ethics.

Topics covered typically include:

● consequentialism
● deontology
● virtue ethics
● ethics of care
● principlism
● autonomy and paternalism
● the ethical foundations of consent
● liberty and toleration
● evaluating and constructing ethical arguments
● introduction to the library and electronic resources
● how to write essays in ethics
 

Ethical Issues in Care of the Dying (30 credits)
 

This module focuses on end-of-life issues and care for the dying. It includes topics on the significance of death, the sanctity and value of life, the idea of 'quality of life', withdrawing and withholding life-prolonging treatment, and ethical and legal issues in enthanasia. The practical aspects of care for the dying are also addressed through a focus on the Liverpool Care Pathway.

ACADEMIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The following entry criteria must be met:

• Normally a 2.1 classification in an undergraduate Honours degree. A lower degree classification may be considered, on a case by case basis, depending on other postgraduate qualifications or experience.
• English Language and Maths GCSE Grade C or above (or Functional Skills Level 2)
• IELTS - An overall score of 7 is required with no less than 6.5 in each subtest taken in one sitting.
• A satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) or overseas police check, and health checks are required to meet the Social Work England requirements for registration.
   

You would be expected to have some general knowledge of social services and broad social problems before you start your course. Although it is not a requirement for entry, relevant experience is recommended. You should possess a driver’s licence by the time of your first placement, to support your placement experience.
