About
Officially known as the University of Keele, Keele University is a public research university located in Keele, Staffordshire, England, about three miles (five kilometres) from Newcastle-under-Lyme. Keele was established in 1949 as the University College of North Staffordshire, and in 1962 it received a royal charter granting it university status. The university was founded as the result of a trailblazing idea for a distinct type of university, by Lord Lindsay, former vice-chancellor of Oxford University, in a nation still recovering from World War II. Its initial goal was to produce graduates with the technical and specialised knowledge to advance society as well as an understanding of the social and political environment that drove this need.
Keele is located on a rural campus of 625 acres (253 hectares) close to the community of Keele. The campus is made up of large woods, lakes, and Keele Hall, which is situated in the Staffordshire Potteries. It is the largest campus university in the UK and features a conference centre and a scientific park. At a separate location at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, the university's School of Medicine runs the clinical component of its courses. The neighbouring Clinical Education Centre serves as the home of the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
