Program Overview

Climate change is the single biggest global threat to our planet. As governments globally pledge to clean up their energy systems and reduce emissions, there is a growing demand for professionals to develop, implement and manage the alternatives.

Keele’s MSc in Smart Energy Management is an interdisciplinary course which incorporates database management, data analytics, system design and practical programming skills, together with deep insight into the energy business environment, including energy management strategies and energy demand forecasting. As such it prepares you for careers across the energy sector, as well as more broader computing or IT roles.

One of the distinct advantages of this course is the fact it is delivered in conjunction with the £15m Smart Energy Network Demonstrator (SEND) project. With access to real-time data, you’ll witness first-hand the innovative and intelligent solutions being trialled for energy generation, distribution, storage, forecasting and energy balancing across different energy sources.

Thanks to its partnerships with a range of local, national and international businesses, SEND offers up to 25 paid placements each year, typically lasting three months. One student worked on a project for an engine manufacturer to identify and review technologies that can be used to recover thermal and kinetic energies when testing an internal combustion engine. Another developed gamified apps over smart meters to engage users in positive behavioural changes towards their energy consumption at home.

Course Content
COURSE STRUCTURE

The MSc in Smart Energy Management is aimed at developing an advanced knowledge of the underlying principles and concepts of smart grids, enabling technologies of smart energy, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI), as well as cross-disciplinary issues such as sustainability.

With a September start date, this course is studied full-time over one year. During the first part of the programme, you will study seven core taught modules (105 credits) over the first two semesters. Modules in the first semester concentrate on the technological aspects of the course, while the second semester modules expand this knowledge into sustainability and strategy management by covering topics including environmental sustainability, research skills, and information management.

In the first semester, you will also pick one optional module from a choice of two – focused on either data science of software development – depending on your interests or career aspirations.

The second part of the programme gives you freedom to choose between either a ‘traditional’ formal academic project supervised by an academic expert from the School or opt for an industry placement, including the option to apply for a number of paid placement opportunities as they arise. You’ll be able to discuss with your academic supervisor which type of project or placement is most suitable, based on your performance during the taught modules. Both options will enable you to put in to practice and apply the skills and knowledge learned throughout the course.

To achieve the MSc, you must complete 180 credits. There are two interim awards available, depending on how many modules have been successfully completed: a Postgraduate Certificate for any two modules (60 credits); and a Postgraduate Diploma for all four taught modules (120 credits).
Entry Requirement
ACADEMIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Undergraduate degree in any subject with second class lower (2:2) or an international equivalent.
We will also consider students with equivalent industrial work experience.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENTRY REQUIREMENT FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.
