Why you should study this course

You’ll have access to our computing facilities, which enable you to gain experience using mathematical software packages, like MAPLE and MATLAB. You’ll also receive one-to-one assistance from Sigma, the university’s Centre for Excellence in Mathematics and Statistics Support.

You’ll be taught by a teaching team which currently includes active researchers in applied mathematics and statistics. With expertise in fluid dynamics, complex systems and climate change, the team aim to share their current and published research findings through teaching and supervising projects.

We encourage you to adopt an international perspective with opportunities to conduct Online International Learning (COIL) activities with students from around the world, participate in field trips overseas or spend a year studying abroad in Europe, America or Australia*. We also provide support to help you apply for professional experience on placement opportunities. Previous sandwich year opportunities have been offered by GlaxoSmithKline pharmaceuticals, Jagex Game Studios, The Warner Bros, National Grid, Morgan Stanley financial services, E.ON, Cummins, TATA and Birmingham Airport.

What you'll study

Year one
Your first year lays the foundation for the study of mathematics and statistics, including topics such as algebra, calculus, and numerical methods. You should develop knowledge and understanding in the theory and practice of statistics, exploring the concept of probability.

Year two
In the second year you will have the chance to develop the mathematics and statistics which you started to study in year one, concentrating on a core of algebra, calculus and statistic, and at this stage you will have the option of extending your study to include operational research, or to develop the applicable mathematics from year one.

Final year
The final year should continue to deepen your specialist knowledge, incorporating areas such as optimisation and statistical design, and a choice of optional modules from topics such as financial mathematics and cryptography.

You will also engage in a dissertation project carrying out in-depth statistical investigations in a field that interests you, under the supervision of one of our statisticians. Recent statistics project topics have included modelling of football data, medical data and environmental data.
