Program Overview

Law is a diverse subject and studying it could lead you to careers in law, business and similar sectors. 

By studying Law you will benefit from

  • A course that will focus on the ‘foundations of legal knowledge’ in years one and two and then offers you the opportunity to specialise in a specific area of law in your final year. These specialist areas include: Business Law, Trade and Finance Law, International Law, Criminal Law and Justice, Social Justice, and General Law.
  • Learning facilities, which include a mock court room known as the Moot Room, our teaching expertise and hands-on approach aim to provide you with the confidence and knowledge to explore legal topics and issues.
  • Over 50 years’ experience of teaching law.
  • A course designed for students looking at potential career options in law, but is equally suitable if you wish to pursue a potential future career in business.

The LLB Law degree at Coventry Law School is recognised as a ‘qualifying law degree’ and thus satisfies the academic stage of training for those students considering a career option as a Barrister, as required by the Bar Standards Board.

From 2021, in order to qualify as a solicitor, the Solicitor Regulation Authority prescribes that a person must:

  • have a degree in any subject (or equivalent qualification or work experience)
  • pass both stages of the SQE assessment - SQE1 focuses on legal knowledge and SQE2 on practical legal skills
  • two years' full-time (or equivalent) qualifying work experience'
  • pass the character and suitability requirements.

The LLB Law (honours) degree aims to partially prepare students for the SQE centralised assessments.

What you'll study

Year one

In your first two years of your studies you will have the opportunity to develop the ‘foundations of legal knowledge’, required as part of the Law degree. In your first year you will do so by covering topics such as contract law, public law, tort law and legal methods. You need 120 credits to successfully pass each year.

Year two
In your second year you will have the opportunity to further develop the ‘foundations of legal knowledge’, required as part of the Law degree, as well as studying the Introduction to Practical Legal Skills module, which has been designed to introduce you to a range of practical legal skills, such as advocacy, interviewing, negotiation and drafting. You need 120 credits to successfully pass each year.

Final year
In the final year of your degree you will have the opportunity to elect to undertake a specialist pathway in Law, with each pathway designed to offer a bespoke range of modules covering key topics in each area, including tailored practical legal skills. As well as those modules, you will study an Add+vantage module and a module focused exploring how to continue to build your employability skills, Continuing Professional Development 3. You need 120 credits to successfully pass each year.

International Pathways 2022 Scholarship
You could enjoy a £3,000 reduction in tuition fees.
Our high-quality foundation, international year one and pre-masters courses are for international students who do not meet the requirements for direct entry to their preferred Coventry University undergraduate or postgraduate course. We can support you to achieve the academic and/or English grades you need and help you gain the personal and professional skills required to study at university.

On successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Critically understand the theories, concepts, values, principles and rules of public and private laws within an institutional, social, national and global context.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of contemporary issues and developments within the law both domestically and internationally.
  • Identify and synthesise relevant information from primary and secondary legal sources, using both digital and non-digital resources.
  • Draw reasoned conclusions through the application of legal principles and knowledge to complex real-life and/or hypothetical problems.
  • Demonstrate intellectual independence including addressing and resolving legal and related questions, identifying gaps in their own knowledge and acquiring new knowledge, tolerating ambiguity and engaging in critical analysis and evaluation.
  • Appreciate and demonstrate an awareness of social responsibility and ethical behaviour in an academic and vocational capacity.
  • Communicate effectively, by explaining and conveying information at various levels appropriate to the audience.
