Year one
You will develop an in-depth understanding of the fundamental aspects of International Law and develop English language skills in the context of law, which will help you to communicate complex legal information to colleagues and non-legal specialists.

Specialist guest speakers, which in the past have included Lord Justice Ryder, the Victims’ Commissioner and the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor, Government Legal Department, Law Commission and the Chancellor of the High Court to enhance your understanding.

  Intellectual Property Law - 20 credits
  During this module you will examine the protection of the intangible but marketable proprietary interests related to goodwill, trademarks, trade and personal secrets, know-how and inventions. In addition, you will also explore the protection given to literary, artistic and musical creations; the products of music recording, film, broadcasting and other media companies; and designs used in commercial and industrial spheres. This will include the protection given by UK and EU law and international conventions. The increasing importance of such law in the modern business environment, the protection of biotechnological invention and the impact of the digital environment will be emphasised. You will develop a critical awareness of the nature of the legal protection offered to intellectual property rights and the role they play in modern industrial society.

  International Trade Law - 20 credits
  Nations have been trading with one another for over four millennia. Since the late 19th century, free and fair trade has been of fundamental importance to the prosperity of the global economy. Central to the liberalisation of global trade has been the rule of law; through bilateral trade agreements, multilateral trading blocs, and the establishment of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
  In this module you will study the role of the rule of law in the regulation and liberalisation of international trade, as well as transposing many of the concepts in European Union Law to a global context. You will consider the role of international treaties, in particular the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), in developing a body of international trade law and the creation of rights and obligations upon states, individuals, and corporations. You will also examine the role of institutions in developing international trade law, as well as the settlement of disputes. How international trade law operates in substance and practice: in particular international contracts for the sale of goods, distance selling and e-Commerce, and rules of shipping and carriage of goods by air and sea are also key considerations.

  Banking and Finance Law - 20 credits
  This module introduces you to the core legal principles of banking law. Concepts, issues and problems are developed and identified with the broader economic, regulatory and practical application of the law. On successful completion of the module you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to understand and critically assess the changing approach to complex banking practices. Throughout the module you will deal with aspects of international finance regulations as well as UK banking laws.
