Course Content
The School of Economics (SOE) is dedicated to teaching the science and the art of economics. Our curriculum challenges you to think critically and solve problems with logic and economic intuition.

SOE is ranked as one of the leading economic research centres in Asia and one of the top schools globally for econometrics. The deep knowledge of the faculty ensures that you benefit from an exceptional learning environment.

In SOE, you can study a wide range of courses and opt for specialized tracks in health economics and management, maritime economics, quantitative economics or real estate economics and finance, or a second major in actuarial science or applied statistics.

The soft skills which are important for leadership and success in today's world are honed throughout your programme by active class participation, overseas experiences, internships, community service projects and co-curricular activities

Entry Requirement
- A minimum of 12 years of formal education with good passes in a national/international examination that is recognised for the purpose of admission. Applicants taking their respective high school examinations between January and May 2022 must submit/upload online their actual results within 3 working days after the release of the results. If your high school results are not known by the application closing date, please submit your predicted high school scores as attested by your school teacher/counsellor by 31 March 2022. Self-declared predicted scores will not be accepted. - One of the following standardised test score is required : SAT, or ACT (American College Test), or IELTS** (Academic Test), or TOEFL**, or C1 Advanced, or Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic). PTE Academic will take effect from 2022 admissions exercise.

The minimum standardised test scores requirements (SAT / ACT / IELTS / TOEFL / C1 Advanced / PTE Academic) stated below will be minimally sufficient for applicants to make a competitive competition. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee applicants an interview and/or admission into SMU, as admission is on a highly competitive and selective basis.

Please note that applicants with international qualifications (including UK A-Levels) are required to take one of the standardised tests mentioned above by 19 March 2022, and submit the test scores by 31 March 2022. Tests taken after 19 March 2022 will not be accepted for consideration.

Applicants are required to upload copies of the standardised test scores via Applicant's Self Service after submitting the online application for admission. Applicants must also apply to have their official test scores sent directly to SMU by the testing agencies. You can apply to do when registering for these tests. Please do so early to avoid delay in application processing. SMU will verify your test results with the testing agencies when processing your application.

**Due to the COVID-19 testing restrictions, ETS has expanded the availability of at-home testing through the TOEFL iBT® Home Edition, and IELTS has launched the IELTS Online test for students. Both the TOEFL iBT® Home Edition and IELTS Online are acceptable for consideration of admission to SMU.

SAT /ACT/ IELTS / TOEFL / C1 Advanced / PTE Academic are not required for applicants with IB Diploma, and acceptable diplomas from LASALLE College of the Arts, NAFA and NIE.

- SAT (from March 2016) : A minimum total score of 1,350 with at least 650 for evidence-based reading and writing. Essay is not required
- ACT (from September 2016) : A minimum composite score of 29, with a minimum English + Reading score of 57. Essay is not required
- IELTS : A minimum overall score of 7.0 with at least 7.0 for reading and 6.5 for writing
- TOEFL iBT (internet-based test) : A minimum score of 93, with at least 22 for reading and 22 for writing
- TOEFL PBT (paper-based test) : A minimum score of 583, with at least 5.5 for TWE (Test of Written English) and 50 for reading
- C1 Advanced : A minimum overall score of 185, with at least 185 for reading and 176 for writing
- PTE Academic : A minimum overall score of 66, with at least 66 for reading and 56 for writing
