Given the rapidly changing world, it is no longer sufficient for lawyers to only know the law. Tomorrow’s lawyers must be intellectually agile, capable of responding to situations we have never seen before. At the SMU School of Law, we equip our students with the knowledge, skills, and values that will prepare them for the future of legal practice.

Our multi- and interdisciplinary curriculum goes beyond equipping you with foundational knowledge of the law. We encourage you to appreciate how law operates within the broader social, economic, institutional and political environment, how it is situated within various philosophical frameworks and traditions, and how it might respond to new situations across international borders and into the future. You may further your interdisciplinary education by pursuing a double degree or a second major.

Learning at the School of Law extends beyond the classroom. Our students learn about how the law works in real life through internships (both physical and virtual) with law firms, legal departments, and government bodies. Beyond Singapore, students gain global exposure through the international exchange programme, overseas internships, Law Study Missions, and inter-university competitions. Through campus legal clinics run by our Pro Bono Centre, our students learn to see law as not just a practice but a calling while contributing towards the ideal of equal access to justice in society.

Course Content
Our curriculum has been carefully designed to equip students with both the knowledge and the practical skills they need to thrive in the future of legal practice. We explore not only cutting-edge issues such as the intersection between law and technology, but also how traditional laws cope, and may need to evolve, in order to remain relevant. Our teaching is conducted through SMU’s unique system of seminars, in which an instructor leads a small group of students through interactive discussions. This helps our students acquire knowledge while practising how to communicate it effectively, discuss it critically, and deploy it to solve problems.

Entry Requirement
- A minimum of 12 years of formal education with good passes in a national/international examination that is recognised for the purpose of admission. Applicants taking their respective high school examinations between January and May 2022 must submit/upload online their actual results within 3 working days after the release of the results. If your high school results are not known by the application closing date, please submit your predicted high school scores as attested by your school teacher/counsellor by 31 March 2022. Self-declared predicted scores will not be accepted. - One of the following standardised test score is required : SAT, or ACT (American College Test), or IELTS** (Academic Test), or TOEFL**, or C1 Advanced, or Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic). PTE Academic will take effect from 2022 admissions exercise.

The minimum standardised test scores requirements (SAT / ACT / IELTS / TOEFL / C1 Advanced / PTE Academic) stated below will be minimally sufficient for applicants to make a competitive competition. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee applicants an interview and/or admission into SMU, as admission is on a highly competitive and selective basis.

Please note that applicants with international qualifications (including UK A-Levels) are required to take one of the standardised tests mentioned above by 19 March 2022, and submit the test scores by 31 March 2022. Tests taken after 19 March 2022 will not be accepted for consideration.

Applicants are required to upload copies of the standardised test scores via Applicant's Self Service after submitting the online application for admission. Applicants must also apply to have their official test scores sent directly to SMU by the testing agencies. You can apply to do when registering for these tests. Please do so early to avoid delay in application processing. SMU will verify your test results with the testing agencies when processing your application.

**Due to the COVID-19 testing restrictions, ETS has expanded the availability of at-home testing through the TOEFL iBT® Home Edition, and IELTS has launched the IELTS Online test for students. Both the TOEFL iBT® Home Edition and IELTS Online are acceptable for consideration of admission to SMU.

SAT /ACT/ IELTS / TOEFL / C1 Advanced / PTE Academic are not required for applicants with IB Diploma, and acceptable diplomas from LASALLE College of the Arts, NAFA and NIE.

Minimum SAT / ACT / IELTS / TOEFL / C1 Advanced / PTE Academic Requirements for applicants applying to the Law programme
- SAT (from March 2016) : A minimum total score of 1,350 with at least 700 for evidence-based reading and writing. Essay is not required
- ACT (from September 2016) : A minimum composite score of 29, with a minimum English + Reading score of 64. Essay is not required
- IELTS : A minimum overall score of 7.5 with at least 7.0 for reading and 7.0 for writing
- TOEFL iBT (internet-based test) : A minimum score of 100, with at least 24 for reading and 24 for writing
- TOEFL PBT (paper-based test) : A minimum score of 600, with at least 5.5 for TWE (Test of Written English) and 50 for reading
- C1 Advanced : A minimum overall score of 191, with at least 185 for reading and 185 for writing
- PTE Academic : A minimum overall score of 76, with at least 76 for reading and 66 for writing
Fees & Scholarships
Our tuition fees are highly subsidised by the Singapore Government in the form of a Tuition Grant administered by the Ministry of Education. This makes studying at SMU affordable.

With the adoption of a fixed fee model, students are guaranteed that their tuition fees remain unchanged throughout the normal four-year duration of study at SMU. This provides students and parents a certainty in their financial planning.
