Program Overview

If you are a practising teacher who would like to advance your knowledge, skills and qualification and apply them directly to your own work context, this programme will help you to achieve your goals.

You will be equipped with world-leading research, knowledge and tools to help enhance your own teaching practice. In this way, you can better achieve positive and equitable outcomes for diverse communities and learners.

This practitioner-focused programme is designed to be taken part-time, outside of school hours, using a blend of face-to-face and online delivery.

120-point taught masters. An advanced fast-track degree for practising teachers with at least one or two years’ experience (depending on prior qualifications).

180-point taught masters. An advanced degree that focuses on aspects of Education Practice. Taught courses focus on topics such as Contemporary Pedagogies, Literacy Education, Curriculum Theory and Social Psychology of the Classroom.

Programme structure

From 2020, this programme can be taken fully online through our new digital classroom (hybrid) facilities.

120-point taught masters
- One 30-point compulsory core course: Advanced Study of Education Practice (EDPROF 704)
- At least one Level 9, 30-point elective course from the schedule: Contemporary Pedagogies (EDCURRIC 700), Teaching with Digital Pedagogies (EDCURRIC 720), Accelerate Learning in a Digital World (EDCURRIC 740), Special Study (EDPRAC 703), Ako: Learning to Learn and Teaching to Learn (EDPROF 737), ECE Curriculum Issues (EDPROFST 751), Mentoring Teachers (EDPROFST 762), Curriculum: Theory, Issues, Practice (EDPROFST 777), Education and Diversity (EDUC 716), Adolescence and Positive Youth Development (EDUC 747), Social Psychology of the Classroom (EDUC 755), Childhood Studies (EDUC 767)
- Two elective courses (60 points total) from other approved 700 level courses offered by the Faculty of Education and Social Work*

Further programme requirements

You must have completed an undergraduate degree in education, teaching or physical education; or one year of postgraduate study in education or teaching, following an undergraduate degree, at a recognised university (or similar institution) with a GPE of 5.0 or higher.

In addition, you must have at least one year of teaching experience. At least two years of teaching experience is required if you have completed an undergraduate degree in education, teaching or physical education.

Where could this programme take you?

This masters qualification builds on the knowledge teachers already have through their initial teacher education programmes and teaching experience so that they can achieve greater outcomes through their teaching. It has the potential to enhance qualified teachers’ opportunities for promotion and wider career prospects, through better understanding of Education issues and demonstrated effectiveness in teacher practice. Please note: This programme does not include a research component, which means that completion does not enable you to enrol into a doctoral programme. If you are interested in keeping the option for later enrolment into a doctoral programme open, please consider enrolling into the Master of Education or Master of Professional Studies in Education.
