Program Overview

The Master of Strategic Communication (MStratCom) prepares you for a career in complex, professional media for corporations, public relations, and advocacy. You will learn how to generate communications using creative understanding of the audience and corporate goals, media ethics, and using a range of research and data analytics.

This taught Master’s is well-suited for students wanting to develop skills in public media relations and organisational communication, including those who have no previous experience in these areas, or are wanting to change their career focus.

Course Content
The MStratCom includes 180 points of coursework, including one 60-point dissertation.

This can be completed in 1 year (February entry) or 1.5 years (July entry) full-time study, or up to 3 years part-time.

The MStratCom requires 180 points of coursework, with two compulsory courses, a dissertation, and two optional courses:

Compulsory courses:
- COMS421 Strategic Communication Theory and Application
- COMS425 Campaign Planning with Social Data Analysis
Optional courses – choose two:
- COMS408 Ethics for Professional Communicators
- COMS420 Special Topic: Public Diplomacy
- PACE495 Professional and Community Engagement Internship (enrolment subject to approval by the Arts Internship Coordinator)

Entry Requirement

You should have achieved at least a B Grade Point Average in 300-level courses in your undergraduate degree, or have relevant professional work experience.

English language requirements for postgraduate qualifications

If you want to study towards a postgraduate qualification, eg a Postgraduate Diploma, Masters, or PhD you must have one of the following:

IELTS Academic	An average score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking
TOEFL iBT	Total minimum score of 90, minimum score of 19 in reading, writing and listening. Please note UC only accepts TOEFL iBT scores from a single test date, not MyBest scores.
TOEFL PBT	With a minimum score of 575 and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5
CCEL EAP	Level 2 with a minimum B+ grade
CAE or CPE	Score of 176 with a minimum of 169 in reading, writing, listening and speaking
Pearson Test of English (Academic)	PTE with an overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50
NZCEL	Level 5
FluentIQ	Overall mark of 8/10 with nothing less than a 7 being scored in a single category.
LanguageCert	C1 Expert IESOL (LRWS) with HIGH PASS
NZAPA	English New Zealand Accredited Pathway Assessment Level 3 (with no skill lower than Level 2)

Graduate students of the MStratCom will have advanced skills in communications writing and editorial knowledge for different kinds of media. They will be prepared to lead professional and business communications that go out to clients, and large audiences or communities.

Strategic Communication graduates will find their skills highly valued within organisations involved in public policy and advocacy, government agencies, public relations, and also internal communications within companies.

You may also find work in a variety of fields such as news media, publishing, communications advisories, non-profit organisations, social media, and strategic marketing.
