Program Overview

The Master of Applied Finance and Economics is a joint master's degree in Finance and Economics that can be completed full-time in 12–18 months. You will take advanced coursework in both Finance and Economics, followed by a capstone course with four project-based modules including cost-benefit analysis, financial decision-making, forecasting, and portfolio management.

The MAFE offers you:

Course Content
To qualify for the Master of Applied Finance and Economics, you will need to pass:
- FIEC675 Advanced Applications in Finance and Economics
and 135 additional points:
- 60 points from ECON 601–669, including at least 30 points from ECON 620–669
- 60 points from FINC 601–669, including at least 30 points from FINC 620–669
- FIEC601 or, at the discretion of the Head of Department of Economics and Finance, an additional 15 points from ECON 601–669 or FINC 601–669
The degree may be completed in a minimum of 12–18 months full-time study, or up to 4 years part-time study. You can start in January, February, or July (January for international students, and also for those who require FIEC601).

Entry Requirement

Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree that includes intermediate microeconomics, introductory business finance, a calculus-based mathematics course, and an introductory statistics course, and be approved for entry.

English language pathway option at CCEL

Students who are at IELTS level 6.0 are welcome to enrol for CCEL English for Academic Purposes 2 (EAP2) online to enhance their English language proficiency. A grade of B+ or higher in this course satisfies UC English language requirements for postgraduate study.

English language requirements for postgraduate qualifications

If you want to study towards a postgraduate qualification, eg a Postgraduate Diploma, Masters, or PhD you must have one of the following:

TOEFL PBT	With a minimum score of 575 and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5
CCEL EAP	Level 2 with a minimum B+ grade
CAE or CPE	Score of 176 with a minimum of 169 in reading, writing, listening and speaking
Pearson Test of English (Academic)	PTE with an overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50
NZCEL	Level 5
FluentIQ	Overall mark of 8/10 with nothing less than a 7 being scored in a single category.
LanguageCert	C1 Expert IESOL (LRWS) with HIGH PASS
NZAPA	English New Zealand Accredited Pathway Assessment Level 3 (with no skill lower than Level 2)
