Learn the essentials of working in hospitality with UCOL's New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service (Cafe Service & Function Services) (Level 3). You'll prepare and serve the types of food and beverages offered at cafés and functions, and develop professional skills that employers value.

You will have opportunity to cater for events, and students at UCOL's Palmerston North and Whanganui campuses will have the additional benefit of gaining real-world experience in our training restaurants.

Course Content
During your studies you'll learn to:
- Apply health and safety, food safety and security practices to ensure your own safety and minimise potential hazards when serving customers (10 credits)
- Communicate effectively when serving customers and others in the hospitality industry and behave in a professional manner with colleagues, customers and managers (5 credits)
- Follow standard operating procedures to deal with familiar problems in the hospitality establishment (5 credits)
- Prepare and serve food and beverages in a café (20 credits)
- Provide food and beverage service for in-house functions (20 credits)
Entry Requirement
Domestic Entry Requirements

NCEA Level 1 (including 10 Literacy credits and 10 Numeracy credits)

OR

Equivalent academic achievement

OR

On a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Executive Dean

English language proficiency

If English is not your first language, you must also demonstrate English language skills equivalent to an IELTS overall band score (academic) of 5.0 with no band score less than 5 (or equivalent including TOEFL). IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form (i.e. combining scores from more than one test is not permissible). UCOL is a TOEFL testing centre.

International Entry Requirements

In addition to the Domestic Entry Requirements, the following applies to international student applicants.

English language proficiency

International student applicants whose first language is not English must have an IELTS Academic score of 5.0 with no band score lower than 5 (or equivalent including TOEFL). IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form (i.e. combining scores from more than one test is not permissible). UCOL is a TOEFL testing centre.

Under 20 years of age

In addition to this, international applicants under 20 years of age must have NCEA equivalency.
