Program Overview

Use technology and creativity to solve the complex challenges of our time, and learn to think outside the box with the Bachelor of Creative Technologies.

The Bachelor of Creative Technologies is New Zealand’s most innovative bachelor’s programme. It’s designed for this fast-moving digital era that recognises we need to think creatively about the application of technology in society. You’ll learn to identify new opportunities and creative approaches to guide the transformation of industries and businesses that this era requires.

The programme is organised around projects and challenges. You’ll learn existing and new technologies, creative processes and strategies to collaborate with others to tackle the complex challenges of our time. You could apply your skills to a wide range of fields, from developing a new creative audio or visual artform to solving one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Course Content
Year 1

You’re introduced to key concepts of creative technologies and develop these through diverse studio projects. Projects will vary and you’ll learn how to express your ideas in a variety of digital and physical media – whether it’s through video, sound, mechatronics, games or smart objects.

You study the following courses:
- COMP570 Programming for Creativity (15 points)
- CTEC500 Integrative Practice (15 points)
- CTEC501 Creative Technologies Studio I (30 points)
- CTEC502 Introduction to the Creative Technologies (15 points)
- CTEC503 Creative Technologies Studio II (30 points)
- ENEL599 Physical Computing (15 points)
Year 2

You have more choice of studio projects. Each semester has a number of themes that provide a degree of focus, but you’re encouraged to develop your studio projects in creative, unexpected or provocative ways. We encourage you to work in teams or with people outside AUT.

You study the following courses:
- CTEC600 Knowledge, Inquiry and Practice (15 points)
- CTEC607 Creative Technologies Studio III (30 points)
- CTEC608 Creative Technologies Studio IV (30 points)
And choose one course from:
- CTEC601 Synthetic Realities (15 points)
- CTEC602 Interactive Technology and Systems (15 points)
- CTEC603 Digital Fabrication (15 points)
- CTEC604 New Media Applications (15 points)
- CTEC605 Creative Audio (15 points)
- CTEC606 Experimental Imagery (15 points)
- CTEC609 Technology, Culture and Creative Practice (15 points)
- ENTR680 Entrepreneurship and Innovation (15 points)
You also choose two more courses from the options above or from any other AUT degree as approved by the programme leader.

Year 3

You work on more complex projects in the studio. Projects may be developed in consultation with industry partners.

You study the following courses:
