Program Overview
The Masters in Clinical Education and its associated Diploma and Certificate courses have been designed to equip all health professionals, regardless of disciplinary background, with the knowledge and skills required to be effective clinical educators. When the courses commenced in 2005 they were the first multidisciplinary programmes for clinical education in Ireland, and among the first worldwide. Over the intervening number of years, the programmes have grown, developed and evolved to continue to help participants to become effective clinical supervisors and motivators of student learning in various roles, disciplines and settings, both nationally and internationally. All three programmes are delivered online via distance learning, thus making it possible for applicants in full-time work, based in Ireland or abroad, to participate.
There are four course options:
- The Certificate in Clinical Education is an introductory course for health professionals interested in developing themselves as clinical educators. It is composed of four core modules which run from September to April.
- The Diploma in Clinical Education is a medium level course designed for health professionals who are interested in devoting a dedicating part of their working life to teaching and learning. The diploma programme is composed of six modules; the four core modules from the certificate programme and two optional modules selected from a suite of five available. The diploma may be completed over one academic year from September to June, or over two academic years, whereby students take three modules in the first year and three modules in the second year.
- The Masters in Clinical Education is a high level course designed to help professionals who are interested in taking on leadership or scholarship roles within health professions education. Applicants need to complete the diploma course before being deemed eligible to apply for the Masters course and/or present evidence of having achieved a diploma level qualification in a similar health professions education course elsewhere.

Two of the component modules from the certificate and diploma programmes are available as stand-alone Professional Credit Awards. These modules are Clinical Teaching Methodologies and Foundations of Assessment in Clinical Education. Students who complete one or both of these modules and subsequently pursue either the certificate or diploma programme will be granted recognition of prior learning in respect of these modules.
