Program Overview

The goal of the Postgraduate Diploma is to provide a learning environment in which students are provided with the necessary critical and analytical skills to make sense of societies undergoing rapid and dramatic transitions.

The Postgraduate Diploma programme interrogates the political, economic and social dimensions of change in transitional societies, using Ireland as a key point of reference. Our aim is to stimulate students to think about the role that sociological analysis can play in helping to advance solutions to the current social and economic challenges. The programme also provides professional training in analytical reasoning and research methods in the social sciences.

Course Content
Students will complete 60 credits over the academic year.

Students will take a core module on analytical reasoning in the social sciences (10 credits), alongside two core social research methods options (20 credits).

Students will also take three additional substantive modules (10 credits each). Each module will be delivered through 24 hours of in- class teaching in the form of seminars and some computer lab based workshops.

The core programme will be delivered in co-operation with the existing M.A. programme in Sociology. Students will be introduced to existing social science research archives and data sets, (including the Irish qualitative data archive at Maynooth) and major research projects including the ERC funded New Deals project.
Entry Requirement
Bachelor Degree (4 years):
Minimum of 60% overall for a 2H2 award.
Minimum of 65% overall for a 2H1 award.
Minimum of 75% overall for a 1H award.

Special Consideration for 3-year bachelor degrees:

Will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Applicants must have completed research, a capstone project, a thesis, or an equivalent.

Special Consideration for Applicants from specific universities (Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Calcutta):

May be considered with a minimum of 55% overall for a 2H2 award.
May be considered with a minimum of 60% overall for a 2H1 award.
May be considered with a minimum of 70% overall for a 1H award.

Graduates of this course will be able to work as social researchers, work in policy, in the media and in a variety of organisations and industries. They will be able to develop, execute and report on research projects for a range of public and private sector goals. Graduates will be able to interface with programmers and designers, and with those working on the statistical analysis of data. There is a demand for digitally literate graduates who understand the social, cultural, political, legal and business aspects of managing transnational online customers and users. The MA is also suitable for those who wish to bring their sociological knowledge to a new level, and potentially move on to doctoral research.
