B.ED Bachelor of Education - Primary Teaching

As a Single Major Bachelor of Education degree, a range of education-related topics are studied in first, second, third and fourth year.

• This degree is designed to prepare students to be primary school teachers. You will take Education modules and a school-based placement across all four years of this professional teaching degree, as well as a placement in the Gaeltacht for two fortnight blocks in years two and three of the degree.
• Child-centred and active approaches to teaching are central to the Froebel philosophy and permeate the ethos in the Department.
• The foundation disciplines of Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology and History of Education form the theoretical basis for this degree.
• Education modules and school-based practice within a variety of placement settings feature across all 4 years, as well as a placement in the Gaeltacht for 2 fortnight blocks at Easter in second and third year.

The mature age is 23 years or older by 1st January in the year of entry to the University. Admission is based on your application and/or interview. Mature student applicants must meet the same course requirements as per non mature applicants: at least 3 x H5 and 3 x O6/H7 including a H4 in Irish or have attained level B2 minimum in TEG; O4/H7 in Maths; O4/H7 in English.

 
For those who completed the Leaving Certificate prior to the new grading system, applicants need 3 HC3 and 3 OD3/HD3 including HC2 in Irish; OC2/HD3 in Maths; OC2/HD3 in English.

 
A combined application process exists between Maynooth University, DCU and Marino Institute of Education.

• Make an application to CAO by Feb 1st and list MH001 anywhere on your list of preferences
• After the application, in March, the CAO send out a Supplementary Information Form to all applicants applying for the BEd across MU/ Marino/ DCU
• Applicants will be called for interview (where a portion of interview will be conducted in the Irish language) and arrangements for interviews will be administered by colleagues in DCU regardless of where the applicant has applied to

The fees for B.ED Bachelor of Education - Primary Teaching may vary from €6,500 to €15,000 annually for tuition fees. The fee's prices may get higher for International Students.

Graduates are eligible to register with the Teaching Council and are qualified to teach in primary schools in Ireland.
