BA Media Studies

at Maynooth University

A year of study is 60 credits. Media Studies students:

• gain practical experience through hands-on instruction in both digital and audio-visual creative media practice.
• learn about the impact of a range of media forms in society, culture and politics.
• broaden their educational experience by studying Media Studies along with Arts subjects (such as languages, business, social sciences, computer science).

FIRST YEAR

• 30 credits of Media Studies theory and practice modules
• Choose up to 2 additional Arts subjects (or Critical Skills) from groups 1-5 (max 1 per group). The only compatible double subject is Mathematics (Pure).

SECOND & THIRD YEAR

• Media Studies as a Double Major or Major/Minor with 1 of your 1st year subjects
• Optional 10 credit Electives in 2nd year
• Students may apply to study overseas after 2nd year (on Erasmus or Study Abroad) and graduate with a BA (International) after 4 years. See the International Studies website for details.

Mature students should apply to the CAO by February 1st 2022. Late applications from mature students may be accepted after this date - consult the Undergraduate Studies website for updates. Application may not be made to the CAO after May 1st 2022.

 
A mature student is 23 years or older by 1st January in the year of entry to the University. For part-time degrees the mature age is 21. Admission is based on your application. Candidates are shortlisted for interview on the basis of written assessment and also on the basis of the information provided on their CAO application form.
 

Mature students must complete the CAO section for mature applicants fully, indicating clearly past or current studies, and outlining educational goals and objectives. All questions should be answered in full.

The fees for BA Media Studies may vary from €6,500 to €15,000 annually for tuition fees. The fee's prices may get higher for International Students.

Graduates emerge with practical production and research skills, and a broad understanding of media dynamics.
Many seek careers in television, radio, and film production, web design, media research, social media marketing, advertising and public relations.

Our graduates have taken up positions at RTÉ, Virgin Media, Microsoft, BBC One and in marketing departments of large corporations. Others have become independent creative professionals in web design or film-making.
