About
Acadia University (AU) established in 1838 is a public university in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada. Horton Academy (1828), established in Horton, Nova Scotia, by Baptists from that province and Queen's College, served as the precursor of AU when it was founded. Acadia College was the institution's latter name. The AU Act and the Amended AU Act 2000 are the enabling statutes for the university. The current president is Peter J. Ricketts, who took office in July 2017.
Acadia University’s acceptance rate stands at 60% to 70% with over 4,500 students out of which 600+ international students are from over 60 countries all around the world. It is primarily an undergraduate institution with a few graduate courses. AU has over 200 undergraduate and 17 graduate programs to choose from. The student-faculty ratio is 15:1, with an average class size of 28 students. It is divided into four faculties: Arts, Pure and Applied Sciences, Theology, and Professional Studies. Each faculty is subdivided into departments and schools that specialize in teaching and research. The co-op program at the university is one of the best in the country and Open Acadia provides correspondence and distance learning courses. AU also has outstanding varsity sporting programs and excellent championships in Atlantic Canada. Maclean's magazine has put the university in the top five in its category for the past 30 years.
The university is a Smithsonian Institution laureate and part of the National Museum of American History's permanent research collection. AU is also the only Canadian university chosen for the Computerworld Smithsonian Award in the Education and Academia category. The alumni working in major positions are William Twaits (CEO of Imperial Oil Limited), Rev. William A. White (Noted Black Minister and Missionary), Stephen Wetmore (Former CEO of Canadian Tire Corporation), David H. Acadia University Entry Requirements
